17' canoe

Can I fit a 17' canoe on a Wrangler? I have an opportunity to get a 17' cedar strip canoe but if I can't put it safely on the jeep its not much good.

I've put mine in a utility trailer with ratchet straps for past few years. The ass sticks out a bit. I need to make a cradle for it that fits into the trailer so it looks less hillbilly. My old Sears canoe (45 years old or so) is heavy fiberglass and I'm afraid to try to lift it up on top in any fashion.

Check out my avatar. Length is not an issue.

My canoe is light royalex. Wood canoe will be considerably heavier making your jeep even more top heavy.

If you have a front receiver hitch, or rear, you can buy, or make, an extending mount to help hold it up. if you had one front and rear, you wouldnt even need a roof rack. But really, i dont even think you need those. but here is an example of one.

17 feet is 204 inches, and i think the jeeps length is only 165?? maybe. But if you strap id down on the roll bars right, i dont think there should be a problem.

Hard top or soft top? Just to let you know that cedar strip will prob. weigh about half of what a plastic canoe would. I have a 18 1/2' cedar strip and a 13' flat back old town and the cedar strip weighs about 50#

I made a trailer for mine, but that was for cooler storge and canoe trips with camping gear for two guys. I could easily fit my 17' Old Town on the top of mine but I have a LJ.

Sense where all the topic, i have canoed and kayaked in Boy Scouts a lot back years ago, and its something i enjoy. I have borrowed kayaks to go with friends, but since you are all owners, where is a decent place to get a kayak or canoe at a decent price?

This being said it would be a weekend warrior thing, so i dont need top of the line, but i also dont want some cheap junk thats gunna only last a single summer. I dont know which one i want more, canoe or kayak.

I have a 17' Michi Craft aluminum and even though I haven't had it on the TJ it was in our old YJ more than once and we had no problems. We even hung bikes off the side of the cage and had camping gear and coolers in the back all on a 4 cyl. The only thing I would not suggest is putting it on top right after it was in the water if your sitting in the seat you'll get pretty wet.

Also I regularly have two kayaks on top of the TJ for 2.5 hour trips.

I like L.L. Bean for outdoors stuff. They aren't always the best price but they have the best return policy ever. For whatever reason, you broke it, it doesn't work right, you just decided you don't like it 10 years later. They will buy it back for whatever price you originally paid for it. Only downside is shipping, you are going to have to pay freight for something that large. But then again pretty much any place you will have that problem if you buy online.

we got some modular kayaks through them a few years ago. Point 65 North i think is the brand. they literally come in 2 pieces that interlock and ratchet together. I have to put the top down but i can stand the 2 pieces up in the back with the seat out. If spring ever comes I will go take pics of it.

River Otter is a good brand the plastics are thick and they are pretty reasonably priced for an entry level kayak and they are good for fishing to if you like that.

Thanks for the info, i have seen the otters around, and i like ive borrowed a gander moutain one before. The problem with buying a kayak is i would have to atleast by two. id prefer not to go alone, and im not a fan of the 2 seaters, so im trying to decided if maybe the canoe is a better choice. ha i like both canoes and kayaks for different reasons and i dont know what one i should look for

Go to rei.com. and depending on where you are at they may have a store close by. Free shipping on orders over $50, and crazy good return policy broken your fault or theirs faded whatever they'll take it back. And usually can find a sale this time of year online.

Old canoer...got tired of trying to lift 80# of canoe on top of the Jeep....and the whole "going by myself 'cause of schedule I worked back than thing" had pushed me to get the kayak....28# faster more agile.....did that for a few years...than met my wife...and she wanted to go also...so got another one...and 2 Kayaks will ride side by side on top of a TJ...my only problem now is getting them on top of the Jeep with 3.5-4" of lift on 33"s

Here is a Pic of my "Old Town Otter" cheap but very tough

Don't know how your rack is designed. But on the rear of it, can you put one of those foam tube's around it?

if so you can get the nose of the kayak on top of the foam tube and use it as a roller to shove it up to the front. Getting the second one up will be more difficult because the first one will pin the roller in place, but it should still slide over it fairly easy.

with the top down you could still try the foam tube thing. But top up I am not sure of an easier way to get it up there.

Oh and if you go with either one without a rack you have to watch tightening it too much on the windshield. You could see to frame on our YJ start to flex and we broke the windshield on our Cj. The TJ does have a stouter windshield frame but you still have to watch the pressure.

Here's how I mount two kayaks. It's my profile picture but its easier to see.

With my Tax Return, i went a bought a canoe, kind of a seat of the pants buy. I probably shoulda done some more research and it was on sale (sale was ending the day i bought it, The clever "sale" ploy got me)

Its a 14.5 footer, (shorter than i wanted, but again, sale) Im hoping i can take it out soon. if i wanted to get a bigger one maybe i will later.

Since its over 12 feet, they gave me a piece of paper to fill out and register it? do i have too? and is it gunna cost me?

IDK about your state...here in IN we "register" mainly for ID purposes...say if it got stolen...prove yours isn't the how many other canoe/ kayaks running around...they do have serial numbers...at least my Kayaks do...did see an old canoe one time that did not.....also until you put a motor on it (here in Indiana) there is no tax or anything else needed. just reg fees. less than $20

Good to know. So i should just do it, pay and not worry about it. I just cant imagine parks and rec guys asking for my registration or anything.

Double check your state.....your rules may not be the same...having your registration for the canoe COULD also be another form of ID..for you and that never hurts!!

Ok so I am buying a canoe tomorrow and I am curious how people strap these things to a four door hard top. I have stock front and rear bumpers. I am a bit worried I won't have a good spot up front. Rear I have the two areas on the tow hitch. Any help would be great. I am going two hours away possibly to purchase this. So a long first trip with the canoe.
