1997 Jeep Wrangler Sport, am I over paying?

I'm new to this forum and my dad is about to buy me a jeep. I found one that looks pretty nice IMO and I don't want my dad to pay too much for the jeep because I have no idea what the prices of jeeps are supposed to be. This jeep is a 1997 Jeep Wrangler Sport. Blue, tan interior. It has big wheels on it (not sure about the size). 4.0L V6 Automatic. The back of the jeep needs to be re-painted, the driver seat is partially ripped. Radio isn't OEM. Now the most annoying thing about this is that there is a bikini top on it. I need to get a new top so my back seats are able to be accessed. Anyways, how much will I need to re paint the back of the jeep and how much will a drivers seat and a new top cost me? Is this jeep worth buying? Price of jeep: $5,900. Oh and it has 142k miles.
By the way, instead of painting the back, would it be cheaper to buy some trail armour to cover up the missing paint? Which armour is the cheapest and would look the best?

That is a decent price. I paid 6k for my 97 with 119k miles.

And a cheap can of spray paint or bedliner will take care of your paining needs.

Even if you get trail armor you will still want to paint to prevent rust from pipping up under it.

Not a V6, straight 6, just so you know.
New seats around $250 apiece, some more some less. Depending on how big the rip, seat covers might take care of it around $150 for a pair.
New soft top with hardware $500 to $700, a frameless top just under $400.

These are general figures. You can find more expensive versions, you might find used much cheaper.

16 year old vehicle, use some spray paint.

Also change all the fluids, new belt, wipers.

Figure spending another $1000, for parts.

Price varies depending on where you live. For reference, I paid 8K for my 99 with 113,000 miles. It had full doors, hard and soft top, 2" BB, 32" mudders and around $1000 in the sound system. I'd offer the guy $4500 and meet somewhere in the 5k area.

Take it to a mechanic and see what else it needs and work that into the price.

I sold my 99 for 7K with 103,000 miles. That one looks like you could get it for 4K or less. It's pretty basic/no adds/torn seat.

IMO...you got options...to be honest there was a thread earlier a guys 4cyl '97 TJ was totaled insurance said $6100.....YOU could get a windjammer and some black fabric paint and paint them all to match and probably be all right in Georgia..and be very cheap for the top part...and from what I can see some good seat covers would take care of the tear in driver's side.....If I was sure i wanted a full top I would get a frameless and matching upper front doors....GL

i think it looks great for the money. i agree about getting a top and painting the back but, i'd start with a tune up before i worried about the seat. and yes a can of bedliner would be perfect for the back. it looks like it also has flush mounted tail lights too.
