1998 4.0l vs. 2004 2.5l?

Looking to buy my first jeep, and I reached a dilemma.

I can get either a 1998 4.0l 5spd Sport with 58,000miles, OR I can get a 2004 2.5l 5spd with 54,000 miles. Both have full metal doors and soft-tops only, both are stock, except the 04 has some crappy tube bumpers that would be coming off. The 04 is $500 more.

I would rather the 04 because of 6 years less rust and wear, but everything I read says to avoid the 4cyl, which may be good advice because I am moving to the foothills of colorado Aug. 1st. However, right now I drive a 96 4cyl 5spd tacoma and think it has acceptable power.

So if it were you, what would it be, the 2004 2.5 for the 1998 4.0 for the the same cost and mileage?

98 4.0L then again I might be biased seeing as I have a 98 4.0L in red. Id say get the 4.0L, it has more power than the 2.5L which will come in handy if you plan on a lift and bigger tires in the future.

Alright... That is how I was learning, but the lure of 6 years newer was drawing me in. Now I just need to check it out in person and see what kind of deal I can haggle.

The 2.5L I4 was in the TJ from 97-2002.. In 03 they went to the 2.4L I4

Go with the 98 as long as it's in good shape
-XJ- 2001 Jeep XJ Cherokee - Gone
1999 Jeep XJ Cherokee - Party Hard

Comparing the 2 just off of miles is a little hard. Some pictures and a little more info if possible would be better. But for that amount of money I would trade engines for my 2.5 in a heart beat. Plus if the 98 has almost the same amount of miles on it as an 04....that should tell you that the 98 isnt driven nearly as often as the the 04. I vote for the 4.0 all the way

When in doubt...FLAT OUT!
