1998 Sahara for $6000?

what do you guys think abouts this jeep

98 Jeep Wrangler TJ

went and talked to him last night and he said he'd drop the price down to $6000 just because he needed the money. its a manual with 129k, a hardtop, soft top, Bestop trail top, half doors (no uppers) full steel doors (rough condition). He bedlined the tub with u-pol raptor as well as the bumpers, fenders and couple other things.

it has a 4 inch lift with 32 in tires and crager wheels. rust on the frame is all to bad just a few spots where its started to eat. never been offroad, paint in pretty good condition.

only problem is when i drove it the clutch felt like it was about to go. I'm going to drive it again before anything final but i have a slight feeling its starting to slip.

I think its a good deal even if you have to replace the clutch, as long as its surface rust. If the frame is rusting on the inside, I would negotiate some more. It doesn't have Sahara flares on it though, they've been replaced with regular flares it appears.

He said he bedlined them, but they look pretty smooth to me. Look for any scratches and body color behind the paint because if he replaced the flares it could have been into an accident. Poke around underneath and look for bolts/nuts that have missing paint or even welded frame/body spots to show signs of a possible accident.

I don't know if you drive a manual or not but if you or any others do how does your tranny feel when shifting into gears. I'm talking about the actually gear shifter. I've driven a 97, 04, and 07 wrangler and it feels more like butter when putting it into gear. This one feels like its got a a gated gear shifter and I have to really guide it into each gear. This isn't because there's no shift boot is there?

I'm not sure where you are located, but down here in Fl you can find Jeeps like that down here for around $4500-$500 and no rust. I have even seen some 97-99 for around $3500, just without a top. That's just my .02

Its missing the center console, rear seat, and you believe the clutch is going out, I would pass at 6000. I have seen much cleaner newer jeeps for around that same price.

Maybe offer 5k that would seem more fair. I just bought a 99 sport w 130k miles for $5500 and it needs u joints and a tune up and tires i like it a lot but should have negotiated more....up to you bud, mine has no lift though as of now...good luck, does look to be nice

Should of added, it does come with a center console he just doesn't like the look of it so he took it out. It also has a rear seat. Plus a Sony head unit with the quadratec security cover thing and new speakers all around.

I'm not sure if it's the clutch yet. Going to meet up with him again soon and test drive it harder this time. If the clutch is fine I'm getting it, if not I'll have to bring him down a bit.

And I'm located in Virginia by Washington D.C. This is about the price most jeeps here go for.

i don't think it's that bad for the area around here (i'm in MD). definitely check the clutch issues you think are present. plus all the extra parts you could sell if you didn't want to keep them.

Ok. What do you guys think of this? Last week I spent $8500 on a '98 Sport with 6cyl, auto, AC, Hard top. 70k miles with carfax? No rust anywhere, no dents, no paintwork, no accidents, Adult woman original owner. The only mod was some larger tires on the factory steel wheels. all the black trim needs to be repainted though. They cleaned it with something that turned every single piece of black plastic hazy, even the plastic trim in the interior. One possibly major flaw is a P0455 EVAP CEL condition that I didn't know about until two days later. I might have to pay an extra $50 for a bypassed emissions inspection if I can't sort it out.

I think I paid about $1500 too much. Everybody says I was crazy when I say how much I paid. Thing was, Finding an Automatic hard top with under 100k was nearly impossible in my budget. I only found a couple others, and they were sold.

What do you guys think?

So I may not have acted quick enough.. He left last night for a vacation and since I didn't call him back soon enough he let a buddy of his at work borrow it for the weekend to try to persuade his wife into getting the jeep. He's getting back to me Monday so I'll see what happens. If not I'll just do some more searching.

seems high, but if it has everything that you wanted & couldn't find elsewhere, it's supply & demand. or sometimes you just to wait for the right deal. i paid $9500 for my TJ, but only thing i wanted that it didn't have was that it was an auto. mine was a 5 hour round trip to get it. but it had everything else i was looking for & some other extras that made me not worry about it being a 5 speed.

i'm a believer of everything happens for a reason. if he keeps it, then there is something else out there for you. there are plenty of jeep, sometimes you have to take your time finding it. my situation is the perfect example.

Hahaha you're just like my mom. That's what she's been saying. I'll believe that when I find an incredible deal on a wrangler. Currently I got alerts on Craigslist anytime a new jeep is added for under $7500 so I'll wait it out.

Waiting longer = more money from work = smaller loan I have to take out

The price you paid is fine, for a Jeep in that condition, with 70k miles, and stock (not wheeled). In my area (Texas), that Jeep would have easily gotten $8500. Don't sweat it...you got a fair deal. Especially in your area of the country, where rust destroys all cars.

Pricing is relative, I'm sure some will say that i paid to much for mine.

2002 Sahara, Hard Top, D44 rear, 76k on the clock, 5 spd. I paid 12k for it. Not only did it have everything I wanted, but it was at a local Jeep dealership, so I got a warranty and someone to bitch to if I had any issues. (did have a couple things fixed under warranty) I looked all over the state and didn't find a better deal when i was shopping.

The biggest factor for me was that I live in Maine, and any wrangler that has spent its life here is either well on its way to the frame rusting out or its been garaged through the winters and is extra pricey. The average price on a low millage (under 100K) wrangler with a solid frame and clean interior is closer to 14-15k around here.

The wrangler I bought had spent its entire life in GA, the prior owner moved to Maine and traded it in on a new JK. So the underside was pristine. In the end I know I paid more than people in the south do, but I have no regrets. I got what I wanted, and it will last for years.

Make sure you get the Jeep that has what you want and if you are happy and can afford it, then it was the right price for your Jeep.

Time to take the top off and go for a cruise, once you find the right one, when you start it up you will realize that you would of happily paid twice what you did for it.

it's true. i was looking at a 97 with like 165k, only had a BB lift on it. but it was an auto with a/c. he wanted $4500 & wouldn't budge on the price. so i passed. figured with the cost of the jeep + the long arm kit that i wanted i would be around $9000.

i found my TJ down in richmond. had a long arm & a TON of other things the owner had done. it had under 41K (verified through autocheck), but it was a 5 speed. but i figured all the other things it had (D44, air lockers, flat fenders, etc)....i could overlook it not being an auto. i paid more than i wanted too up front, but know it would have cost way more to do even half the stuff this TJ has on it. i bought mine for $9500.

This is exactly right. I looked within a 500 mile radius for my jeep. Had a trip lined up to drive 450 miles to look at a jeep I was on the fence about. Had all my requirements but one, Automatic. Luckily the guy sold it the morning of the day I was gonna leave. Wound up finding exactly what I was looking for cheaper and 200 miles closer to home.

I don't think I could drive anywhere more then 200 miles to buy a car. I'd need someone I trusted to check it out and even then I wouldn't be sure. just the thought of driving 3-4 hours and not even being sure you're getting what you thought it was.
