Hey guys, wondering if anyone can help me... I have my first jeep, a '99 TJ and the first gear keeps 'popping' out, only from starting cold normally, and can sometimes be a pain to get into reverse too... Any ideas? Very concerned re gearbox!
Location: Toledo, Oh (Where Jeeps are born THEN raised)
Is your jeep lifted or have a BL? Remove the outer shift boot cover and look down in the opening. There is a second rubber cover under the outer. Shift into 1st and reverse and see if the shifter is hitting anything. You might have to cut or tear the inner shift boot in the 1st and R positions. I had major trouble shifting into 1st, 2nd and R. Tore the boot a tad and shifts like butter. Just my $.02. Someone else might have a suggestion for you.
'Cuz im Mr. OOGIE BOOGIE and you ain't going NO WHERE.
No it's not lifted and not sure what BL means... Sorry, very new to all this! Will have a look and see if your suggestion works, it's weird as it doesn't stall or cause any problems and defo doesn't feel like I'm crunching the gears or anything. Will let you know!

Do you mean it grinds when shifting into Reverse? If so, that is normal because Reverse gear is not synchronized. The way to shift to stop the grinding is to first momentarily shift into any forward gear and then shift into Reverse.

My 08 pops out of first here and there also just make sure your fully engauged when you shift into first. Seams to be helping me. As for reverse, shift into first then reverse as first is synchronized and will align the gears allowing reverse to line up. Works for me in my jeep, both my old tj and my jk and my subaru.

My 98 with the ax15 transmission done that alot
Since I switched the gear oil to synthetic 10w30 motoroil
30 something thousand miles later it hasn't poped out again,no longer grings third.
Reverse is normal to grind cause it has no synchronizers, sometimes I gotta bump the clutch to get reverse to line up
When mine poped out of first it sounded like something was breaking, very loud when it pops out at 2000 rpm
If you have the nv3550 transmission.....I don't know if synthetic motor oil is approved for that transmission
Ok so moving into 1st gear briefly before reverse is working yay! 1st is still popping out all over the place as a bit unsure on how to

I think I need to find me some guys to help me!
Also... at Pincho, how do I find out which transmission figuration I have? I know it's a manual, but not much else?!!! PLEASE excuse the dumb blonde!
Hum, if this were my Mustang I would be checking my adjustable stops on my after market shifter. In the case of the jeep, this would not be the case. Never the less, I would pull the boot off and look down to see if it is getting fully engaged. Try driving with boot off for a while too.
Question, is it popping into neutral and the shifter is actually moving? Or, is it slipping at the clutch?
It feels like it's trying to get back into neutral, but just makes this massive thudding clunk noise and then grinds if i'm still accelerating (which after the first few times I obviously stopped doing pretty quickly!) I then have to go into 2nd then back into 1st and try again. it's never done it twice in a row...
I took the "outer boot" off as suggested to see if cutting the "inner boot" would help. I just don't see how cutting the boot would help anything in this situation. I have a coil spacer lift and what I'm thinking is that it's thrown the linkage off just a bit, so it feels like its going into gear, but probably not fully engaged. Holding the stick in place corrects this issue for me. It's only when I take my hand off (and only sometimes) when it pops out.
My 1964 M38A1 would pop out of third gear. It had a bad "poppit ball" in the shift tower which held the shifter in gear. Do later trannies have this part? It was just a ball bearing held in place by a spring. Really easy to get to to replace.
I'm having the same issue in my '05 4.0 6 speed no lift. I put it in 1st and it pops out violently the shifter even moves back to the neutral position, other gears engage fine. It only has 60,000 miles and just stared a month back, but is getting worse. I see a lot of people are having this problem but haven't seen any hard solution. Help?
