1st Low tooooo fast

Hi all
having an issue with 32 inch tires and a poor low ratio with my '96 TJ Auto
Are there any modifications suggestions ? Don't want rock crawler speeds but would like it to hold it's own on a steep muddy down slope without having to use two feet and a please no thought

sounds like he is using 4L 1st gear to go down the hill and using the gears to slow him down instead of wearing out the brakes. but hes movin too fast. now hes lookin for a way to make it go slower. im not sure what u could do except possible regearing. i have the same setup but a standard tranny

What is your current gear ratio? 3.07?

Sounds like you may be interested in a 4:1 transfercase. You could accomplish low crawl ratios many ways:
  • Used NV241OR or Rock-Trac Rubicon transfer case
  • Teralow kit
  • Atlas II
  • Stak
  • Klune V

To name a few...

Also you could flip a dana300, or do what the Toyota guys do and go with a "doubler".

With your 32RH transmission, the likely issue is your axles are geared too high (perhaps 3.07) and need to be regeared to a lower ratio like 4.10. That will raise your rpms on the highway and give much better low-end performance as well as allow your rig to drive much slower in 4Lo and 1st gear at the same rpms that make your rig try to go too fast now. Plus you'll gain better compression braking with a lower axle ratio like 4.10.

Your crawl ratio( how slow the jeep will move) is just under 23:1... if you had a 5spd it would be closer to 40:1depending what year etc. Thus would be much slower if you got some 4.10's it would work out to around 30:1 which would be much better.

The cheapest most effective change would be shorter narrower tires with deep lugs. Have fun.

How did you calculate his current crawl ratio without knowing his axle ratio? I guessed he might have 3.07 but he never mentioned his axle ratio.

Hi all
yes you are all on the right track as to my question.
I have indeed got a 3sp auto with the axle ratio of 3.07
Need the big tires to get through the big holes left by Nissans and Toyotas with 35' tires. Not much left of the track after those guys have been through Getting the teralow kit works out to $2500 New Zealand Dollars, ouch thus if there is a better way I'd rather take that route. How hard to regear the axles to 4.10 as suggested ?

Cheers
