2.5L or 4.0L

Hi, I am looking into purchasing my first Wrangler Jeep and wonder if anyone could offer any advise as to which engine is best to go for? I will probablly be buying upwards of 1997 - 2003 and any general guidance would also be appreciated for this age group of Jeep. Thanks in advance, Gem

Get the 4.0, you won't save any money in regards to fuel mileage in regards to the severely under powered 2.5.

4.0, especially if you plan on adding larger tires. And depending on how much bigger, plan on re-gearing.

What are you planning on using it for? Is it going to be your daily driver? Do you have much offroad driving experiance? If offroading , what type? (trails, rock crawling, mudding...?) Of the 3 votes of 4.0 have any of you driven a 2.5?

Get the 4.0. I previously owned a '92 YJ/4.0-6cyl and now have an '01 TJ/2.5-4cyl. I miss the additional power both on-road and off-road.

I don't know anyone who bought a 4.0 and wished they had not. I know many who have had the 2.5 and wished they had the 4.0.

Buy the 4-cyl and you'll curse at it everyday. I own one, and will soon replace the 4-cyl with a V8 so the jeep can actually be driven without worry of...oh, I can't go that fast, oh I can't tow that, oh these 31" tires are killing my acceleration, etc. etc.

Plain n' simple, get the 6. The 4-cyl is just too weak.

This is why you buy the 4.0. Unless you get a hell of a deal on a 2.5...then I'd still sait for a 4.0....but I look at it like this.

How can I get more power? ok, I'll do that.

the 4.0 is bullit proof, it has more power, it gets equivalent mpg, the parts are just as readily available, its been around since the beginning of time, your jeep will be easier to sell later on with it....etc.

I got a four banger and can't wait till the engine goes so I can get a chevy 350, on the plus, I'll end up with a 350 instead of an I6 :-)

I had a 92 with the 4 banger and pulled a 20' Ranger bass boat all over Louisiana and Texas.

It wasn't fast, and you had to be READY to stop........because the boat was heavier than the Yeep.....

Yeah but that 350 is a heavy engine. It will add un needed weight. And you might want to go with a TH 400 tranny if you want an auto tranny

i second all of this
the only reason i have a 2.5 is because of the awsome deal we got.

Go with whatever you desire.
Try out both 2.5 and 4.0
