2000 TJ running over 210 degrees

Hello all,

I have a engine temp question. My TJ normally runs around 210 degrees, but I recently changed my ring and pinion from 3.07 to 3.73. Now my engine RPMs are higher going down the highway, around 2K around 65 mph. On long trips, my engine temp is now around 215-220. Do I need to replace the thermostat? I have no idea what temp the thermo is, it's the factory one, I do know that. Any info or advice is greatly appreciated.

That your engine RPMs are higher after regearing to 3.73 means your engine is not having to work as hard now... so that's not the reason for your slightly higher temps. I'd guess something like a partially clogged radiator, hanging thermostat, or you simply need to flush your cooling system. Your TJ requires a 195 degree thermostat if you replace it.

thanks for the quick feedback. Would a bad thermostat also cause some issues with the ECM and the catalytic converter? I have noticed that after the jeep is warm and I turn it off for a few minutes, then restart it, it reluctantly starts, as if there is an exhaust issue too. I'm not sure if there are any connections.

A Jeep that is slow to start when the engine is still hot is often experiencing what is called "heat soak" where the engine heat is causing the fuel in the fuel rail and injectors to boil. Jeep has a TSB to fix that issue which consists of placing pieces of foil backed insulation under the injectors to keep the heat away from them. Caution a dealership will charge to install a TSB, only Recalls which are safety related are free.

You can try adding insulation there yourself which may fix the problem.

Jerry, thanks again for the tech info. Since my engine is running hot, is that why I'm experiencing this heat soak? I've never had the issue until just recently, probably the time my engine started running hot.

I just bought a new thermostat/gasket but I won't be able to instal until Tuesday after work.

Just looked at the engine. The foil backed insulation is already in place and in good condition.

If the thermostat is hanging up, would that cause an interuption in flow of the coolant, which then would cause the rough re-start?

Replaced the radiator cap...no change.

Replaced the thermostat...bingo! Temp is now right around 195/200 where it should be. Took about an hour from start/finish. Cost: $11.00 for cap and thermostat/gasket. I love easy, cheap fixes.

Thanks to everyone for their advice and info.
