2000 Tj Transmission sound question

My jeep has a jasper rebuilt 3 speed transmission in it with about 10k miles on it (the transmission). The PO had the transmission put in a few years back. I have noticed that when in reverse and on the brake, I hear a light "grinding" sound coming from near the transmission. Occasionally when backing out of the drive way, when I come to a stop and pull it into drive, the jeep will lurch and die. Snap it into neutral and it will start up and away I go. Is there a part or a bearing somewhere that could be causing this? Or would I be better off taking it to a transmission guy?
