I'm new hear and getting ready to buy a used 2000 TJ. From doing some research it seems that I can go with a 31x10.50 tire on the stock wheel with a stock TJ as long as I adjust the wheel stops to avoid rub at full lock. Can I go to a wider wheel and tire if I use the right backspacing? I was thinking about a 15X9 or 15X10 inch wide wheel with 3.5 inch backspacing and a Pro Comp tire in the size of 31X12.50. I know I'll need wider fender flares but will that combo fit on a non-lifted 2000 TJ?
with the wider tired and the fact that your aren't lifted, when you flex, the tires won't tuck up under the flares so you're probly end up tearing those up, even with wider flares, i think. you might be able to add a 2'' BB and be alright. i know that most people prefer to put 33x12.50's on 15x8 wheels with 3.75 or 4'' of backspacing(holds bead better at lower psi), but i don't know whether 31x12.50's would fit.

If the 31X10.50 fits under the stock flare on a stock TJ, then if I got flares that were at least 2 inches wider (to cover the 2 inch increase in tire width) then I might be ok as long as my wheel backspacing was correct so as to not allow rubbing on the front LCA or rear spring perch while not moving the tires too far outbound. Should I try it or am I nuts?
For reference on my old Jeep I used to run a 33x12.50 with 3.75BS on 8" rims, these would rub the control arms at full turn, and after a while took the paint off the arms in a small 2" area or so. I didn't do any adjustments that you talked about, so I would think with the steering stop thing, you should be okay. Here are a couple pic's, not the best, to let you see how far they came out. The flares are 6" xenon (spelling?)

but you also have to account for the almost 2'' extra in backspacing. the way it would go would be that the backspacing would put the tires 2'' farther out, then the tires would add 1'' even father(1'' on either side of center). so they'd stick out almost 3'' further than stock. in any case, i think that you would need a small lift even with the flares to make it work. whether thats a BB or just a 1'' BL. that's my opinion
