2001 TJ Sahara, good deal?

Hey team.

I'm a long time motorcycle rider and have decided to move to a jeep after slipping on some ice on the way to work.

I'm thinking about checking out this wrangler. Does it look like a decent enough deal to you? I'm not looking for a steal, but I don't want to pay more than I should.

It's a 2001 TJ Sahara with 95k miles, 6 cylinder manual, hardtop + bikini top, new Goodyear MTR 31s, 2-inch spacer lift, and some other not-important goodies. The owner says it runs and looks great and seems like a nice guy. He's asking for $9,000. I won't be able to check it out in person until the weekend since it's so far away from me.

The miles seem about right and it's priced between blue book private sale and dealer sale.

Assuming it's working well and you wanted a jeep... would you jump on this? Thanks for the help.

if everything checks out.....MAYBE.

You want to find out what axles and gear ratio the Jeep has... it could possibly have a rear Dana 35 with 3.07 gears. A Dana 35 with 3.73 gears. Or a Dana 44 with 4.10 gears.

This is important for the size of tire the Jeep has and also the tire that you potentially put on it.

31" tires would be ok for a Dana 35 with 3.07....33" tires would not be...AT ALL.
Dana 35 with 3.73 may be doable with 33s.... but a Dana 44 with 4.10 gears would be ideal.

On a different note....ask if he would allow you to take it to a shop so you can review whats wrong with it.

I think thats about right for a manual. An auto in my area, Chicago, in the same condition/mileage would be listed for 10,995 EASY.

Plus no stupid taxes to worry about- I'd say its a pretty good price

If it checks out, Id snatch it up

P.S. I've been looking at used TJs for 4 months. I'm pretty familiar with prices

Yup.

Take it for a test drive and make sure you put it in 4 wd on a straight section of road to make sure it is working.

Sounds fair but I would make a lower cash offer. I paid 6500 for my 01 a few years back with about the same package. He was asking 8k and I just offered 6500 and he took it.

Ahem, I have 33's with 3:07's and it's is fine for me..... But.... Mine's an auto, I do hear they are more liveable than standards with higher gears. Depends on where you drive and what you expect from it.....

OP, do as they say, and check it out, offer less, see what he says. Pricing is a little high for my area, but not bad. I gave a bit over that for my '01 with auto/soft top/ lots fewer miles a year and a half ago....

My questions in order are:
1) Carfax
2) maintenance records that can be verified
3) Oil leaks, oil burning
4) Permission to have it inspected at a shop of my chioce
5) Personally, I like extended conversations. I was in Law Enforcement and trained to listen. During an extended conversation you can ask many questions in different ways. Write down the questions before hand and leave space so you can write in the answers, ie. documentation. This can give you a feel on whether you beleive the seller is honest. If I have any reservations, I walk away.
6) If everything above checks out, make an offer. I really enjoy my TJ and I have owned over 50 other vehicles, of all sorts, so that is saying A LOT!
7) Good luck, and enjoy what you end up buying.

Thanks for all the help folks. We've got the price down to $8300 and the carfax is very clean, above average.

I'll have a chance to ask about the axles tonight.

as someone with a 4.0 manual, 31s and 3.07s, I can unequivocally say they're NOT FINE. they suck. Don't expect to be able to maintain 70mph on anything more than 0 degree incline (in 5th.) However, as that is a Sahara, and has the Rubi rims, I would not be surprised if it has a D44.

that being said, considering it already has a hard top (a ~$1000 option) I'd say as long as the frame looks good and there are no leaks, it sounds like a decent deal even with 3.07s. However, if I'm not mistaken the Seattle area has lots and lots of hills. So expect to spend a lot of time in the clutch with 3.07s.

side note: god, I hate those sahara monochrome fender flares. but easily fixed with a trip to

The above information in bold is incorrect. While it may or may not have a factory D44 rear axle, it will not have 4.10 gearing due to the fact that it is a Sahara (6 cyl) and the only 6 cyl TJ that got 4.10 gearing from the factory is the Rubicon. I believe 3.73 is the standard gearing for D44 equipped TJs.

Those aren't "Moabs" (from a Rubicon) Those are "Ravine" wheels.

Since its a sahara edition it will have a dana 44 in the rear only if its manual. If it is an automatic it will have 44's in the front and rear.

Perhaps you're getting it confused with Rubicon. IIRC, Sahara is a luxury package, not an offroad package. It could possibly have a 44 in the rear, but certainly not in the front (if its stock) I'm certainly no expert, so I could be wrong, that's just as my knowledge goes.

Buy the Jeep you'll be happy. If not you can drive out here and kick me in the tenders.

Wow, this whole thing has me thoroughly confused. Take the jeep out and give it a good run. Get it on the highway and see if your comfortable with it. Take it off road and test the 4 WD. If you like it, buy it. The price is reasonable and it's a great looking Jeep.

Looks *just* like mine. Do your self a favor and check out the rear end. I got lucky and have the d44 rear end, manual tranny, I6, with 31s on it. Hold fine at 75 going up a slight grade as well.

Sounds like a great deal, I got my '02 Sahara, 77k from a dealership for.... ah hell that part ain't important. I'm glad I got it. Get it, you won't regret unless the owner is hiding something.

I have a 2001 Sahara 6 cyl with automatic, 3:07 differential, and 31 tires. It cruises very nicely at 65-70 MPH over any rolling hills but I do run a lot in 2nd gear while in the mountains of Colorado. Off-road on most jeep trails (no rock crawling) it does fine in 4Low. Got no idea whether the differentials are 35 or 44. It has 59,000 miles with a hardtop, had it since new, non-smokers, no pets or children, NADA lists it for clean trade-in at $10,400 clean retail $13,275. I wouldn't take a dime under $11,500 for it so if yours checks out okay I'd say it would be a terrific deal. Sounds like its a good idea that mine isn't for sale.

For what it is worth I bought mine, an '01 Sahara with the same mileage for $10,200 just over 2 months ago from a local dealer. It is an Auto and has a D44 rear end with 3.73 gears on 30" wheels. Sounds like this is a good deal and one I would not have mind seeing 2 months ago, but I am more than happy with my purchase.

About in line with what I've been seeing (although, I live in a very high price jeep area it seems) There's one right up the road from me about like that for $9995 at a dealer...who kept trying to sell me on the sparkly clean chrome tube bumpers and sidesteps..had to smile at his face when I said those would be the first things to go

If everything checks out ok and the price is right for you I'd get it! Doesn't matter what you pay for them, they all become priceless after a while
