looking to get into the Jeep family, hopefully by the end of this week. Checked out a 2002 4-cylinder manual and drove it. Really god shape and great on the road. Any advice on the purchase? And are 4-cylinders not good for the highway? This will be a daily driver and any help is appreciated.
I would stay away from a 4cyl if its going to be a dd. They are fine for offroading (nice and torquey), but are really underpowered for everyday driving. You end up running at high rpms which decreases engine life. My sister had one, she wanted the 4cyl for better mpg. She ended up regretting it after she drove my 4.0, and she realized she was only getting 1 mpg better.
I am happy with my 4. But, 70-75 is fast. Top up is not much of a problem for that speed, but top down and headwind and i would say you're maxed at 70. Much happier driving around at 60-70mph. I won't road trip in mine, so it's just city driving. I'm content and never in a hurry. Mainly, the good thing about a 4 is that it's cheaper to buy. If there's no budget, get a 6. Otherwise a 4 banger works.
That's a good looking Jeep..Would I prefer a 6cyl? yes but I have little complaints with my DD 4cyl. Most of my driving is hwy with 32" tires, stock gears. Only issue is lack of hp sometimes trying to pass or picking up speed on highway incline. I don't see any issues if you plan on keeping it stock. Most hwy complaints are from upgraded larger tires with stock gears .Best thing I recommend is to test drive it again on the hwy going 70.
I really enjoy my 4cyl I def would like a 6cyl but my budget didn't allow that. I bought a jeep to have fun and cruise in summer with the top down. It's an se it does have AC but I will never use it. For now it has stock stereo but will change soon. I drive it to work every day it gets decent mileage considering its a jeep I knew the mileage wasn't gonna be good. If I wanted to drive a veh with leather and nav and all that I would buy a luxury veh. I bought the jeep for fun
I just did a long trip with my daughter in her 98 jeep with a 2.5l and it wasn't too bad on the highway. On flat roads with a tailwind, it had plenty of power and cruised at 70 -75 no problem. on flat roads with no wind it was fine at 65, anything over 70 was tough. Into a headwind on long gradual hills it would slow down to 60 or less and you would have to downshift and hold 4000 rpms to keep the speed over 60. We spent a lot of time drafting behind trucks to keep the speed up.
And we only averaged about 16 mpg, so don't but it for the gas mileage.
I own a 4 banger too, ive riden and driven 4.0's as well. The 4.0's have more power for around town driving and its nice( i cannot lie). However at hwy speeds I think aerodynamics is the bigger factor. Do I wish I had gotten a 4.0, yes. Do I dislike my 2.5, No. Offroad I have no problem keeping up with anyone
