2002 4WD Question

I just purchased a 2002 Wrangler with an 8" lift. The 4WD light on the dash is off when in 2H but will only light up PART TIME in 4H or 4L. The FULL TIME & 4LOW lights never come on. Also the Shaft from the Transfer Case (PTO Shaft?) to the front axel always spins. As someone new to Jeeps, I guess I have a couple questions.
First should this front shaft spin even in 2WD?
Second, When should the dashlights come on and in what case?

The front drive shaft always spins. As for the lights, my TJ only had a 4WD light I think.

Shaft & Dash Lights

Thanks for the information. I have been reading about a commom problem with the dash lights. I would like to better understand when each of the 3 lights should be on so I can better troubleshoot.

TJs do not have a "Full Time" 4wd option. The dash panel and lights were shared common parts with the XJ though, which had a Full Time (Selec-Trac) option. The light isn't connected to anything in the TJ.

There is no change on the instrument panel in my 2004 to differentiate 4HI from 4LO; just a "4wd" light lit up for both (they must have changed from a "Part Time" light to a "4wd" light as part of the 2003 interior revamp). Rubicon models have two additional lights for front and rear axle locks.

Front drive shaft is permanently engaged with the front diff gears, so it will always turn when the front wheels are turning. It is only powered when the transfer case is moved into 4wd though.
