2003 4.0 starts hard after it sits overnite.

My 03 Wrangler with the 4.0 starts hard after it sits overnite. I turn the starter long enough for it to start, then quit, and try again, and it starts right up. Could this be the fuel pump or filter, or is it just the way these 4.0 s are ?

Should start on the first crank. Maybe check your fuel pressure.

Mine does this 00 sport 4.0. What I have found on here is that it is the pressure regulator....allows the fuel pressure to flow backwards and we lose pressure....after you turn your key...pressure builds during cranking....starts on next turn. Haven't had the $ to fix mine....I turn the key and wait a few...then try.

Where is the pressure valve that is not holding, in the fuel pump? If so, Im assuming I will have to drop the gas tank.

the infamous key trick. instead of putting all that strain on your starter turn your key to the on position(without starting) this primes the fuel line.turn it to the off position and the next time you go to start it it should start.eventually you will have to do this a few times before it will start right up. also try parking with the Jeep facing downhill. it helps prevent the fuel from draining back. and yeah you have to drop the tank to permanently fix it

yea anti-drainback valve is bad i bet...if you want to fix it...drop the fuel tank and replace the whole fuel pump assembly....OR turn the key until your lights and check engine light comes on...count to 5... turn the engine..this will prime yo'S!#$ and it shoud crank right up.

Replacing just the pressure regulator won't fix it?

if you are dropping the fuel tank..replace the whole assembly...you will get a new pump and fuel filter this way. Kill two birds with one stone and save yourself some headache later on down the road. Its not THAT costly to do.

It's only "not THAT costly" if you buy a cheap pump assy. That course of action will likely cause more headaches than it cures.

Ok, I tried this coool routine, and it works. Im not dropping the gas tank untill I absolutely have to. Of course, if Im being chased by a huge bear, running out of the woods and I dive into the Jeep........Well Ill wish I fixed it, but the bears gotta eat too I guess..... Thanks robbiecc
