2003 TJ Wrangler Drive Shaft Play?

Hi people!

Would appreciate some professional advise from someone regarding my 03/ TJ Wrangler front drive shaft.

I am about to change the universal joint on the rear drive shaft (near the diff) as it is shot so I checked the front drive shaft to see if it was OK?

The Universal joints on the front drive shaft look and feel OK but I noticed that the drive shaft itself has a little play in it?

Roughly about 1cm (1/3") when I turn it from left to right?

Is this normal or should there be no play at all?

If there is a problem even though the universal joints are OK what might it be?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...

A little rotation is normal, as back-lash between the ring and pinion gears in the diff. I think I've got about that much.

Yep, rotational play is perfectly normal and is indeed required. The rotational play is, as mentioned above by LJMJ, is caused by the normal/requird backlash (slop) between the ring & pinion gears inside the axle.
When you have a choice, buy American.

Thanks for the info!

I feel better now that I know that!

I was hoping it wasn't anything serious?

Thanks again and have a great week my friends...
