2004 2.4l SE TJ (Towing)

I've tried googling and searching this site, so if I missed the info some where I apologize. I'm just wondering if anyone has familiarity with towing anything with 2.4L Jeep TJ with manual transmission. I read that it isn't recommended to tow anything with a 2.4L manual transmission. Others say it depends on braking, etc..

In any case, my needs would only be taking some fishing gear to the coast and wondering if I can pull anything to help with the space needs. Thanks for any help you can offer.

It'll pull a trailer fine. But don't expect it to pull a huge trailer, the Jeeps wheel base is just too short to handle heavy loads.
My 2.4 with the 6 speed pulls small trailers just fine.

Remember the 4cyl is rated to pull 1000 lbs, but the 4.0 is rated at 2000. I would say you're safe to pull up to 2000 lbs, the only reason the 4.0 gets a higher rating is because it makes more power, not because it has better brakes or anything.

The towing rating has more to do with the wheel base then the engine. For example. A regular Tj can tow 2000ibl max where a LJ can tow 3500lbs. The only diff between these two are 10inches.......thats what she said...lol. Sorry I had to.
Most people say dont tow anything with the 2.4. Like JDT said if its small and light then you should be ok. The 4 bannger is a dog without towing though so be careful when you are.
0-60 in one trip sort of dog.
