2005 4.0 Auto dies in reverse and revs jumping

2005 4.0 Auto dies in reverse and revs jumping

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I recently bought this 05 unlimited auto and I have been having trouble with it shutting off intermittantly. It seems to only happen when the jeep is warm, and it's only occurring in reverse. When I put it in reverse, the idle will jump around for a second, then the jeep just dies. It has no problem starting back up and driving normally afterwords. It happens about once every 3 or 4 days, so it's not all the time. A related (I think) problem has happened twice where I have been at a stoplight and the engine just starts revving up and down, the idle bouncing. I have to keep a foot on the brake to keep it from going. When I shift into neutral, it stops.

I can pay to have the 70k powertrain warranty put in my name for 18k more miles but I'm thinking this is electrical and won't be covered. I would prefer to spend that money to fix it. Any ideas?

Welcome! I am pretty new here as well and I have an 04 Wrangler 4.0. All I can tell u is that mine has intermittently TRIED to die on me in 1st gear as soon as there's load on it and it has sputtered and spit (missed) and stumbled and I swear it had died on me before but it never has completely died on me..... U need to message "doc" and look at this forum and other categories cuz he and a few more of the regulars are SO helpful and they know their sh*! Look at some of my posts under "ntddyz" and u will see the responses fr the lifers on here that will really try to help u out if they dont just see this first! Have a great day! Btw all I know is that MY Jeep is a moody sucker when it wants to be but what vehicle isn't??!!!

Sounds to me like your TPS (throttle position sensor) may be giving you a hard time. Check for a loose connection and prove out the sensor using a voltmeter.

I'd also try cleaning the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve too.

Transmission control module might be going bad? Either reflash it or replace it would be my vote. Any codes?

I have a 94 jeep grand Cherokee and just had 2 transmissions replaced in it. had it 2 weeks and transmission has been driving ok. but today after I drove it a bit and turned it off when I started it back up and put it in reverse it started sputtering and trying to die and when I put it in neutral it revs up real high. it did die once in reverse. I have been having some other issues recently though like my check engine light will come on and my gauges will go crazy and my security system comes on while driving and I have to put key in door and lock n unlock it to make it go off. then some other times when engine light comes on it tries to die. hasn't done that n bou 4 days. anyone have any advise don't want to have to replace training again.
