I might have found a good replacement for my dead 2003 SE in a 2005 X that is a fair price. It is missing a lot of stuff and is scratched up (probably needing hood and grille paint, which I really don't care about). The mileage is low for the price and it has nice tires and rims. It *supposedly* is in excellent mechanical and physical condition (save for the paint) and the price is low because of the missing bits.
After speaking with the lot owner about it we both think it was a repo. He bought it at auction and could not remember who sold it. He thought it was a bank or finance company. The X is missing the rear window, needs new front upper door halves (broken zippers, so basically it needs a new top) and is also missing the spare and the spare rack assembly and the rear seat.
He said that no one in their right mind would sell it that way, that it had to have been snatched and the missing stuff was left behind with the former owner. I agree. I just looks like a repo for several reasons.
I ran CarFax and it had four owners, including this dealer. Initially it was a lease vehicle. After three years it was sold to an individual, who sold it to someone else, who was probably unable to pay for it.
It looks to be a typical X, much like the SE but with the 4.0L and the heavier tranny. The seats are cloth. I cannot tell much more from the photos.
It is about eight hours from me. I intend to check it out this week.
I need from you guys a list of stuff to check.
I have heard these sometimes came with a Dana 44 on the rear, but that the weaker one (like on my SE) might be back there, too. I think it has the D-35 in the front. Anyway, how do I tell which one is on the rear? Please post photos of the two. Some of the lightweight rears had rubber plugs and some had metal, so that is not a decisive way to tell. Getting close to see the numbers might not be an option. So is there a way to tell solely by looking?
The dealer has mis-listed the tranny as a 5 speed. I think he just typed in what had been common with the TJ series for so long. But the 05 and 06 ones should have a six speed, right?
Where should I take it for a pre-purchase inspection? I would imagine a dealership. But will a DC dealership actually do anything useful for the cost? Or should I take it to a local indy shop?
I know zero about the 4.0L as my nine years as a jeeper have all been spent with the 2.4L in my 2003.
Any advice on what I need to look for regarding suspension and such. With the fairly heavy spare/rack and rear seat gone it rides high in the back. The front looks normal, so I am guessing that it has no lift whatsoever.
The tires are Cooper Discoverer STT and the rims are not to my taste but are decent enough for a year or two.
The cosmetics and the missing gear, all of which I have in good condition here on my dead TJ, add up to a price I can afford to pay cash in full.
Mileage is 106K. CarFax is clear of anything other than the details of the four previous owners. Title is clear. Price is not great but I would call it not unfair for what is being offered. And again, I could pay cash and have no payments.
