2006 Rubicon Spare Tire

I would like to get the stock alum wheel and big spare off the tail gate--just too much weight. I carry a compressor and plug kit so most likely I will never need the spare. Not going to lift or go with oversize tires.
I would like to get to a light weight steel wheel and minimal tire. Anyone tackled this and if so what was your solution.

Alloy wheels are always lighter than steel.. I have had no problem with my spare 33" on the stock carrier.. I did shim the carrier out on the bottom, about an inch, and used longer grade 8 bolts so the tire would clear my rear bumper.. 78,000 miles, and lots of off roading, and still no cracks or rattling.. Just be sure everything is snug up against the rubber stops..
