2012 came in...couldn't do it.

Well, the Flame Red, 2Dr Pentastar JK, arrived at my local dealer. Took it for a spin. Very nice, very fast, handled great, very nice ride. More like a little Grand C. than a "Wrangler". Felt "disconnected". Got back in my 05 TJ. Called Salesman back later, told him to forget it. They had it sold within the hour! Anyone with similar story? Thought?

I don't think I could trade up to the new JK's. Too car like and the 4dr's make you look like a soccer mom.

Stock 4 door JK, yeah, but I've seen a few beefed up that look pretty damn good. I can't see spending +30k and then another 10k to get the look I want, but they do have some potential for what I do, and the 4 doors, that's almost a must for some of us.

Thats my plan when I finish my master's degree is to sell the tj and get a four door. I agree, stock jk four door is no count in my eyes, but I have seen some real head turners in my area with a small lift and 33's. With two boys (5 & 2) its hard getting them in and out once the top goes on the tj.

I much prefer driving my TJ to hubby's JK... Better visibility being my primary reason. The JK has too many obstacles between my eyes and outside. They are totally different beasts. He loves it tho', so that's all that matters....

A Jeep is a Jeep. I'd take a JK in a heartbeat. The funnest part of buying my jeep was installing the lift and all. I wish I had the cashflow to just trade mine for a stock jeep of equal value just so I could do all that stuff again.

I still like the TJ unlimited. The extra cargo room would be just enough to finally hold what I need. As for my 3 & 5 year old... they have learned to climb in the jeep to get to the seats.

On think that bothers me about the JK is the look with the doors off. Reminds me of a normal car. The frame just doesn't look right. Like i took the doors off my ford explorer or something...

Ya know, I didn't post to knock the JK. It vas very nice. Just not what I thought it would be. So I was wondering if I'm weird. I do know that I would love to have that new V6, in my TJ. I guess, that's what I wanted/expected.

My feeling exactly. Its V6 doesn't help reduce that feeling either.

I will be buying a jku as my next vehicle, but won't be parting with my tj my outlook is it's payed for so why sell it if I don't need to! It's going to be a couple years before I retire my old ram, so a used 2012 x shouldn't be that bad by then private party.

Jerry, have you seen the new Pentastar V6? It's pretty impressive. They got rid of that silly mini van engine for 2012.

Still wouldn't buy a JK though.

I was in the same boat. NOT a new 12 but I test drove a 08 sahara and expressed my dislikes. I recently traded my Tj for a 07 Rubicon. Night and day, the 12 is a different beast. Don't knock the 3.8 if you have never driven one that is PROPERLY geared. The Rubi 4.10's make a hell of a difference, also the 4 speed auto is a mess, doesn't help.
I love my 07 Jk- but in 2011 and now the 12, they are getting very un wrangler like IMO. I would not expect someone to drop $40,000 and beat it off road, that's why I chose an older model. Will always love my Tj and would like to get another one and make it a trail rig will see- dealing with car payments again

Found this article about the 2012 JK's

2012 JK Wranglers equipped with the A580 automatic transmission, who change their gear ratio will cause the transmission to enter “Limp Mode”… The 2012 Jeep Wranglers with the new Pentastar 3.6L enginehit dealer lots earlier this month. The great news is that Jeep can’t keep them on the lots. The bad news is dealership can’t keep them out of the service bays. The first mod most Jeeps owners make to their Wrangler is to throw a lift kit and a set of over sized All Terrain (AT ) or Mud Terrain (MT) tires on their Jeep. -The next is to switch out the ring and pinion in the Dana 30 or Dana 44 to a more favorable gear ratio.

This is when thing go bad for 2012 JK Wranglers equipped with the A580 automatic transmission. Owners who change their gear ratio will cause the transmission to enter “Limp Mode”. -A safety program the transmission controller defaults to when its senses a change in gear ratio or damaged axle. It is designed to keep Jeep a disabled Jeep in 1st and 2nd gear so it can get home, or to the local dealership, or service station. The bad news? Currently there is no fix. Dealerships can’t override the fail safe. Jeep owners are stuck waiting for Jeep or aftermarket companies like AEV or ProComp to come up with a solution. Jeep has yet to announce a fix for the issue, and most owners have been surprised to discover that its not a warranty issue, due to the fact that the aftermarket part has caused the error.

AEV Press Release:

Warning: Changing gears on a 2012 JK will cause it to go into limp mode.

2012 JK Wranglers now include the A580 transmission. With this new trans comes a new trans controller, and unfortunately this controller is programmed to put the vehicle into limp mode if it senses a change in gear ratio. Even a Jeep dealer cannot override this.

AEV has a fix for this and we are currently working on integrating it into our ProCal Module. In the meantime, we recommend that you hold off on changing the gears in any 2012s.

We expect ProCals with the updated code to be available by the end of September. Stay tuned, we’ll send another newsletter as soon as the updated ProCals are available.

That's jeep for you. It's almost like they pretend that everyone leaves their jeeps completely stock forever.

I was looking at the 12's, although I'll never get rid of my 03, but after reading that... Kinda changed my mind for a while. Atleast until they have a fix for it.

AEV will have the problem fixed in no time. This shouldn't scare any of you away from the 2012 JK. Besides, who buys a brand new Jeep and regears it immediately anyway?

Pretty sure AEV has already got something for it. I remember seeing something on facebook about it. Either way, I dont like the flares/fenders on the JK nor the look of the 4 door with the doors off.

Is it really jeeps fault for all this computer crap? The only issue I have with any new(er) vehicle is just that....It's f-in horrible. Thank god for tuners

haha, i dont blame jeep. im sure all that stuff is law with all the safety stuff out there.
I think ABS is even mandatory these days.

Im also aware TJs have some sort of limp-home mode for over heating and things like that.

but id still like to have as little of this as possible.
If my 1984 ATC 110 doesn't have it then I dont want it. HAHA =P

I actually do like the JK's, but I won't part with my TJ for one until/unless it comes with the diesel(pretty strong rumors of it actually happening!)

Even then, I like the (in my opinion) perfect mix of barebones and just enough comforts to daily drive (ac, ps, radio,) my 2000 has.
