Question 3:73 gears with 33's?

I have deceided to go with the 4inch Superlift while runing BFG AT's or MT's. I have the dana 30 and the dana 44 with stock 3:73 gears. I'm trying to build this on a budget, so I was wandering if I would be OK leaving the stock gears? I would like to get the best MPG since I have a 30 mile drive to work one way. Does anyone know if this setup would work and if so how well? I have also thought about leaving the stock spare. Is this a good idea or should I cough up the extra $ for a matching 33inch spare? Any idea's?

run the BFG MT's, i have them and love them...yeah you'll be fine leaving the stock gears...you would probably only go to 4.10 anyway...some people run 33's with the stock 3.07's and do fine so you will definitely be fine with 3.73's...i would say that gear ratio gives pretty good MPG...the lower the gear the more gas it uses...i think that setup will work fine for on the road and even pretty good offroad...im running the stock spare on mine...i don't think im gonna pop a tire but if i do i can always ride on the small spare...it would only be on there for a short time anyway...but if i had the money i would get a new bumper (warn) with carrier to hold the 33" spare

I ran 33's and 3.73's just fine on mine. I would say, find a nice used 33 as a spare just incase. The stock tire carrier should be able to hold it, might need a spacer, but over time my did crack from the weight.

I just bought the exact same setup Hank. I went with the 33" Mud Terrains instead of AT's. I wanted something more aggressive since its not my daily driver. As a matter of fact, my daily driver (Tacoma) has 265/75/16 BFG AT's and I've gotten close to 60000 trouble free miles. I was driving 140 miles a day for a several months. They run smooth and still did a good job for the type of offroading I enjoy. If I'd maintained them like I should have, I'd be nowhere close to replacing them.

I have always said that if you don't get a matching spare, then you might as well not have one at all. I know my stock spare wouldn't get me off the trail. I've never used a spare that was more than 1" smaller than the rest of my tires.

Besides function, it just looks goofy to have 4 big nasty mud terrains and this little pansy looking donut on the back.

Thanks for all the help. I might look around and see if I can get the bumper and spare tire carrier at a decent price since I was planing on upgrading the rear bumper anyways. Stainless, did you have any trubble installing the lift? I'm trying to figure out what I am about to get into.

its not that bad installing a lift...by the way i run the mud terrains on the road as a daily driver and its not bad at all

I haven't got it on yet. I bought it over the weekend and it wasn't in stock. I decided just to pay the shop to put it on when it comes in. I know I know, I'm a puss.
I just dont have time to mess with it right now. It would be a good 2 months before I could do it...and it was worth the extra money to me to have it done.

It doesnt look too terribly difficult though.

I think I'm going to try to install it myself. I've got a couple of buddies I can bribe with a case of beer. I'm going to try to install it at the auto hobie shop at Ft Meade.

Sounds good, just give them the beer after you're about half way done. If they are anything like my buddies, beer and automotive work just dont mix well.

Did you get the standard lift or the "rock runner"?

it should be pretty easy to install...there really isn't anything hard about it...it is just time consuming...a 16 year old buddy of mine has a garage (his dads) with a pit and everything and he put a lift on his toyota tacoma all by himself with no help...of course he has leaf springs in the rear so its a little easier but it still shouldn't be too hard

I run 35's with stock 3.73 gearing in my 4.0 Auto. It gets probably 11 or 12 MPG. Cost of gearing is about 1100 bucks when all said and done and to gain what maybe 2 or 3 mpg back? It would take me several years to realize that savings.

I have plenty of acceleration and pep on it too. Offroad with my new 4:1 it's a great setup.

ya you'll be fine with the 3.73's...im runnin 3.07's with 32's which is about the equivalent to your setup (will equal out to be about the same, if not yours is better) and i do fine with those gears...i got plenty of pep also...MPG isn't too terrible either

I run 33's, 3:73 gears, with a 4.0, and get a pretty consistant 15 mpg, I normally keep it locked out of overdrive. A strong head wind, going up inclines, or pulling a trailer w/ a 400 lb. atv it tends to shift often, so it makes me feel better just keeping it locked in 3rd.
