3-speed auto?

I was under the impression that my 2000 sahara 4.0 was a 3 speed auto, but I count 4 gears when i listen to it shift. 1- 0to10 2-10to25 3- 25 to 40 4-40 up.

roughly the speeds it shifts at. is it 3 gears with over drive or 4 speed auto, or same difference? haha just wonderin, this honestly makes me feel stupid

The last "shift" is the torque converter locking.

Not overdrive... lock-up torque converter.

The OD is on the newer 2003+ TJ's with the 42RLE.

I asked the exact same question a couple days ago. I am no mechanic but the torque converter is in the front of your tranny and is the "connection" for lack of better terms between the engine and the tranny. I know that is not all there is too it but if your 16 and not a mechanic that is all you need to know. Here is one of the responses I got in my post that explains why.
"Exactly. The torque converter locks up to give slightly better mpg and cooler transmission temperatures which causes the rpms to drop a tad which sounds just like the transmission shifted into another gear. Your transmission type is a 30RH. "

^ in layman's terms yes.

But GoldenSahara00 has a 4.0L, meaning he has a 32RH transmission.
