32rh to 42rle swap

well as i posted in the 'whatd you do for your jeep today' forum my tranny dropped out AGAIN.. 2nd time in 9 months..

well im looking at replacing my 3 speed 32rh to a 4 speed 42rle automatic tranny..

i have a np231 tranny.. will this work? i know its hard work but is the mounting bolts for the tc and engine the same?

no matter what you do it won't work too good if you don't tighten the bolts

Though I converted my TJ's 5-speed to a 32RH automatic, I wouldn't even ATTEMPT to convert a TJ from a 32RH to the current 42RLE. At a minimum, you need a new wiring harness, PCM (engine computer), crankshaft position sensor, plus you have to modifiy the bell housing to move the crankshaft position sensor to a different location (which requires precision on where it gets placed. Not to mention new flex plate, tranny mount, t-case skid and likely a different t-case shifter as well as who knows what else. Just the electronic side of things would be difficult since a PCM new enough to run the 42RLE would not know how to run your distributor-based ignition since all TJs with 42RLE transmissions use distributorless ignition systems while yours uses a distributor.

I don't think it's a good idea at all.

It's not a direct swap... you'll need the new ECU, and all the other things Jerry mentioned for the 42RLE.

I'd talk to the guys that worked on your tranny last. The 32RH is actually pretty strong, and I think the 42RLE was a step backwards when they put that one in.

never mind then lol..

the place i got it rebuilt at is a POS.. same thing happened to someone i know.. they barely missed the warranty by a couple days.. ended up taking em to court.. i dont want to sit and wait nor pay any court/lawyer fees to take em to court..

plus they are just going to say its my fault since its a wrangler and i offroad.. even tho i drove through like a foot of water and the tranny NEVER touched it.. plus i stay CLEAR of mud since the last time my tranny went out..

knowing that the guys at the transmission place that i had rebuild it does crappy work.. i want nothing to do with them.. except maybe a FREE transmission rebuild kit since i got ripped off on the last one they sold me..

you pay for em to rebuild it.. they charge me for the whole rebuild kit and only used the parts needed..

my exs neighbor who is a mechanic.. and a damn fine one at that said he has known the owner of the transmission place since highschool.. said he even worked with him until he saw him ripping people off by not fully rebuilding the trannys in order for them to go to crap eventually..

If you were going to do a transmission swap yourself, sounds like you could just go pull one from a low-mileage rollover in the junkyard, and be good to go for a while... (just don't fill it with mud/water again, and they run for a long time)

If you have to ask what it is or what it does, you don't need it, and you will need help to install it!

im thinking about just garaging the jeep for a WHILE..

looked at an 05 chevy silverado 1500 z71 quadcab.. has 50k miles on it.. 4 yr/ 48k mile warranty for 18k or 300 a month with 4k down..

figured ill find a junk yard tranny to swap in my jeep whenever i get around to it.. and ill have a newer truck to drive as a dd.. then i can tear my jeep down for however long i want..

oh i also checked the same truck but a 04 with 40k miles for the same exact price.. decisions decisions.. dealer told me i can bring it home for the weekend to if i wanted
