33's and 3.07's

OK, who has done it? Will it pull itself down the road at 65 in 5th, or is it gonna fall on it's face. It'll be used on the street till regeared. 04 Sport 5 speed.

I have 3.07s with 31s and my fifth gear is almost worthless.

Its gonna suck ass

you'll prolly be shifting an awful lot. 32's wont be too awfully bad, but 33's are gonna bog you down quite a bit.

with the 4-gear automatic this should work, but with the 5-gear manual you´´ll loose your 5th gear...

I have 33s and 3.73 gears. Need 4th gear to pass anyone and climb the slightest incline. 5th gear is fine if you have a big tail wind.

31's wont be bad.. 32's are bearable, but 33's takes patients

I've driven all - and am going to re-gear this winter with a new axle out back if I can help it

Mathmatically and assuming you had a 30 inch tire stock (I think that is correct for a Sport) the following should be true:

The 30 inch tire has a circumference of approximately 90.29 inches.

The 33 inch tire has a circumference of approximately 103.71 inches.

This increased circumference results in an overall gear ratio reduction of approximately 9% - that is you have gone from 3.07s to an effective rear gear of 2.79. This is assuming you stay in 5th gear on the highway.

We know that 5th gear in the Jeep 5 speed should be about 0.78. If you run the Jeep in 4th gear instead of 5th, you effectively lower the rear gear ratio to approximately 3.40 with the 33 inch tires. This is much more useable and driveable than the Jeep was with the stock 30 inch tires and 3.07s. I also bet your gas mileage will increase if you run in 4th rather than 5th.

Well, that just stinks. I already had my tires and wheels picked too. I was going to run the Cooper Discover STT's on 15x10 Cruiser Alloy 924P's. They make the STT in a 32x11, but it might look stupid with the 4 inch lift coming Friday. I thought about the Tractor pull look, you know, lifted too high over short fat tires. Only thing I found in a 31x13.50 is the swamper's. 99.5 % of the time on the highway, I can't see wearing out a set of them. I've got 15x42's on my 79 Ford, so I know how they ride too. Any suggestions on a tire? 4 inch lift, 10 inch wheel, and stinking 3.07 gears!

look thorugh here

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46712

i know that post #7 there on the first page is 3.5" lift and 32X11.5 and it looks fine, i imagine 10 in wheels and 12.5" 32's would look fine with 4" of lift

I run 33" tires with 3.07 gears. I don't have a problem, but I also have a 6 spd which I think makes a drastic difference. And from what I have researched my 6th gear is still geared lower than your 5th, so you would probally completely lose 5th, b/c I have kind of lost 6th (only highspeed, flat ground driving)

Had 3:73 gears with 33's and it sucked. Couldn't pass on the freeway, had to floor it if going against the wind, even if a bird farted in my direction, I'd have no power. 4:56 and 33's are just right.

4 cyl or 6 cyl, manual ( 5 or 6 spd ), or automatic?

This is exactly what I ran until recently (same year, tire size, gears, auto trans), and I though it was bearable as well, which it is. BUT, since I installed different axles (got d30/d35 axles, rear shafts are chromoly and a rear Detroit locker - TrueTrac, I believe) with 4:10 gearing. For the 3-speed auto, this works out pretty well! Especially if you can get what I got for $300, INSTALLED!

Point being, that 33's and 3:07's with an auto trans is in fact livable, but once you regear, you realize what you've been missing!

Back when I had my 3:07 gears, and back when I installed 31" tires, I hardly noticed any difference at all.
