Just upgraded to 33's and now have a significant mismatch in power. Seems to always be struggling to push the jeep now that I have larger tires. I would like to upgrade gears to match tires but don't know what that would be............

What conversion would help with this situation as all I want is normal power/acceleration for highway use. Driving will be in central Tx hill country.

Thanks for any help you might be able to give!!!!!

With 33" tires, I ran 4.10 gears in my axles and really liked the way it performed. I had a manual transmission, but with an auto you will want to be a little higher geared with a 3 speed, and lower geared with the 4 speed. So we are going to need a little more information on you vehicle to help any more than this...

You don't say which transmission you have (auto vs. 5-speed) but the most popular ratio to regear to for 33" tires for those with 5-speed transmissions is 4.56... which would be a better choice in your hilly situation than 4.10 would be.

I first regeared to 4.10 after installing 33" tires which was against the advice of my more-experienced friends who all recommended 4.56. Within a week or two and after driving one of theirs equipped with 4.56 gears, I regretted my decision to install 4.10 gearing. The 4.10 ratio "worked" but I hated it the entire time I had it, and it certainly did not provide the power that the Jeep had when it was running 30" tires from the factory. 4.56 would have easily restored that lost power.

My next tire size was 35" and I skipped right over 4.56 to 4.88 which really restored the lost power. I'm REAL happy with that combo, and 35" tires and 4.88 is about like running 33" tires with 4.56. And no, RPMs will not be excessive on the highway with 33" and 4.56. :)

You will do fine with 4.10's, but if you ever go to 35" tires, you would be better off with the 4.56's, like Jerry Bransford said. If you do a lot of off roading, I would also recommend a Terra-low upgrade on your transfer case. That will give you a 4:1 ratio in 4 low. That will be an awesome upgrade for you.

I can't emphasize enough how 4.56 would be a better choice of ratio than 4.10 is for 33" tires and your 5-speed. But it's your money and your decision.

I agree. I wouldnt waste time and money. You might as well go ahead with the 4.56's. It is your choice, but you asked..haha

new gearing

Hey, thanks for continued input........I'm still in the market to go either way.

If I go with the 4.56 how will that effect my normal road useage, such as accereration and gas mileage MPG?

I really do appreciate your experience here as I am a devoted Jeep fan that arrived about 40 years too late, but as then and now, cash talks and bs walks.

I am sure that 33's will be as big as I go so please keep posting your opinions and facts as I am trying to digest all of them. I would really like to do this re-gearing thing only ONE TIME.

Thanks again,
Bill B

Hey, I'm still listening! Please share your experience as I have very little, only that this jeep thing is like poison ivy........more I scratch the more it itches !!!!!!!!!!!

If I go with the 4.56 what will that do as far as normal hwy driving goes with restoring normal acceleration and MPG?
