Question 33's...what's needed to run them (metalcloaks, NO LIFT)

Time is nearing my install. About 6 weeks I will have 33's with 3.75 inch backspacing and a full set of metalcloak fenders Fenders I just purchased today...tires will be 33x12.5x15 Cooper STT's. Totally stoked. Now this is mainly a DD but it goes offroad when I can, I do beat on it a bit. The trails aren't simple dirt roads, I flex the suspension to the max. Now with this being a DD I need it to be safe...

Q's

1). Do I need to beef up the steering or can it handle the 33's? I don't want to bend a tie rod while offroading, I don't know anyone that's going to save my ass :/

2). Do I need to beef up the brakes? Can those handle ok as well?

3). Anything I need to do besides get those fenders on? I don't want any surprises, it must be ready to travel back to school (2.5 hours on the highway)

I'm really hoping the fenders are all I'll need, I'd prefer to start saving again lol. I know I'll lose power, I guess I'll have to see how bad and decide if I want that regear. It's an '04 with an inline 6, 5 speed manual (stock everything). I did search for answers but people only want to know about lifts, I'm in no need of lifting yet since the metalcloaks act as highlines! Steering, gearing, and brakes are all fine with 33's. Metal cloaks can run 35's with no lift so you're good. No worries bud.

I upgraded my tie rod to the ZJ V8 after I slightly bent mine with 33s. Many people are fine with stock steering but you have to keep in mind
the stock TJ tie rod is a bit skimpy. I will also be getting some upgraded pads and rotors when I do my brakes soon. It isn't too bad with stock brakes but I figured I might as well since I need new ones anyway.

Here is mine on 35" tires with NO lift.... you should be fine on 33"
I upgrade to the Currie steering and have since went to a Currie 4" lift.

You could install a 1 inch body lift for real cheap to get some extra clearance. Also a nice steering stabilizer would do you some good. But besides that what everyone else said.

If you are "beating on it a bit" as you say, I would do the ZJ tie rod swap. Quick, easy, and cheap. Check your local bone yard. And you might want to get a new speedo gear. Again, this is a cheap and easy install.

The stock TJ "tierod" isn't even a tierod technically. Its just a very long adjusting sleeve.

Best upgrade is swapping over to the ZJ tierod. The cost is under $75 from a place like Autozone. Its also a good idea to get a steering box brace at the same time too. Both should be run IMO with 33's and up.

Upgrade the brakes. Stock suck. Look at black magic when it's time. Upgrade your tie rod too. Trust me.

Pictures are looking awesome!! Great looking jeeps. Thanks for all the info! I think I will order a zj tie rod so it's there when I get home. I'll look into brakes when the time comes then. I saw a guy with 35's and stock steering. He didn't know how he could've bent the rod so badly. I was too much of a noob to know myself at the time but sheesh that thing crushed like a straw!! I'm thinking about doing the exact same mod -loving the way it looks. Post pics when you're done and let me know what your performance is like. I'm on 3.73 gearing - would love to not regear just yet...saving for a D44 before I go that route

The worst thing about the stock tie rod is that we were able to bend it back straight by hand. Yes it's that weak. Get the ZJ.

Or you can save yourself some serious coin and buy some Raybestos ATD477C performance ceramic brake pads which can be had for about $50 online.

Never even heard of these before. BMB are widely considered the best pads you can run on our tjs. And they aren't that much considering they last forever and have superior stopping power both on and offroad.

BM brake pads are nothing more than rebadged "off the shelf" pads available from other vendors online.........do a search on that part # I posted. Its a fantastic pad, its widely available for under $50 online. Run them with a decent set of rotors and/or fresh calipers and your braking performance will be terrific. For $160 I was able to do a brand new set of front calipers, centric rotors and Raybestoc ATD pads for $160 a few months back.

I swapped the pads and went to centric rotors with my calipers which were still good, and noticed a good bit of braking power, especially offroad and when cold. Maybe they are generic pads, but they perform well. I don't make them or distribute them. Ill check those pads out if they are so good. How do you feel about EBC pads?

I know those pads are good. I also know they can be had for a lot less money......reasonable money if you do some research.

EBC pads are good, but there are much better options at a fraction of the cost.

Which pads are they? Interesting. Yellow stuff were known as the top pads before BMB.

Raybestos ATD477C........they "retail" for $125..........but can be had online for around 40-50 shipped.
