33s with 3.07 gears....what would happen

I know from reading some posts that 31s are the biggest recommended tire with 3.07 gears, but what would happen if 33s were put on?

I am looking at some used black wheels with 33s presently mounted on them, so I want to know the problems, if any, I would have if I use the 33s.

Thanks, Dan

what will happen , you're gonna die.

people do it..... its not great, but as far as what will go wrong, not much. bad gas mileage, poor acceleration, and if you have a manual trans don't bog it down cuz you could damage the trans, won't have a fifth gear really. thats about it.

All of what Dave said, and you will also have bouts of depression due to non acceleration

I experience these symptoms with my 32's on 3.07's. My only worry going to 33's would be how long the stock D35 rear would hold up.

Its a coin toss, people break their D35's driving on the pavement. But yea just poor acceleration and not much power.

I have 32's with 3.07's and an automatic. It's fine for around town, but driving in the hills brings the suck.

i ran 33s on a d35 (which you shouldnt have any problems with the d35 breaking unless you drive like a idiot) with 3.07s and didnt have a problem.. you wont be going 80 tho

but then i did do a front and rear axle swap and 3.73s were much better

i think it all really depends on the tread pattern. i put the 33X12.50 on my wrangler after running 31X10.50 duratracs. i fell as though i have more power to the ground because of the less rolling resistance i have with the 33's. im currently running firestone destination at's.

the 33 like everyone said will suck on pavement but lets be honest you dont buy a jeep to go fast. low gear in 4 low itll go anywhere. just lock it. i wheeled my tj a ton before gears and never broke the d35 i just keep light on the skinny pedal

I have 33's and 3.07's on my YJ and kept mine set up that way because I drive it a long way to the Outter Banks in NC every weekend in the summer and like those gears on the highway. I have a set of 4.10 geared axles I bought for $400 that I am thinking about swapping in. It was a lot cheaper than regearing the ones I have. You might go that way instead because on some axles you have to swap the carrier too if you go from 3.07 's to 4'10's.

That would suck worse than bad gas mileage.

I have the 6 speed, so maybe I would have 5th but not 6th? I now use 6th as just an od gear. I don't need it, but use it to keep the rpms down.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I was not sure if I would cause any damage to anything if I used this size tire.

Now that I know that nothing will really happen..........I still don't know if I will run them or not. The tires come with the wheels. The wheels are what I really want, so.....I may run them temporarily and then switch my tires to the new wheels. I don't know.

Thanks again,
Dan

I have 32's with 3.07 gears and it sucks. No 5th gear and poor gas mileage. Changing to 4.10 gears in the spring.

Thanks again to all that have contributed. I was worried about damaging something in the driveline by going with bigger than 31" tires, but now I am not. I only get a chance to wheel it a couple of times during the year, but when I do I want to make sure I can drive it home.

Thanks again, Dan

as long as you are light on the skinny pedal you should be alright.

im a little harder on mine than i should be, i live by the theory "if you dont succeed in first, hit the gas and grab second".

I would love to be like that, but I need my Jeep to get me to work M-F. I wish I had one for work and one for play......maybe some day.

My friend has 33s with 3.07s and you will not like climbing things. It bogs way down in sand too. If you don't offraod a ton you won't mind it as bad.

Ya I have an 05 with a 44 in the rear and i am unfortunatly geared 3.07. I only get 200 miles to a tank if im lucky! and thats shifting at 2k and under. Its pretty bad....really slow...and yes lugs like its obese! Offroad you pretty much can never get away with using 4hi. Always low. I am hopeing to regear here in the next tax season. 4.11 is what quadratec says will be good for 33's and maintain both good highway and city mpg. (well good as it gets anyways lol) If you go to there website and the knoledge center they have a gearing chart. Be worth a look.

I have a Quadratec catalog sitting on my toolbox at work. I look through it every day.
I have two plans/options for my Jeep:
1. Get a rolled over Rubicon and take everything from the t-case to the wheels and install on mine.
2. Give mine to my son when he is 16 and then buy a JK Rubicon.

It will probably end up being #2.

Either way, I win.
