4.56 for 35s.. and procomp vs. dick cepek

Is anyone running 4.56 gears with 35" tires on a 5 speed manual? If so how does your jeep run on the highway? And another question: pro comps or dick cepeks... Does anyone know which tire would be better for a jeep tj: ProComp Xtreme M/T or Dick Cepek Mud Country M/t.. thanks!

If you are thinking of 4.56 then just go ahead and run 4.88. There's only a couple hundred rpm difference in 5th gear and you will love it wheelin.

I have 35" ProComps with 4.56s and I really wouldn't mind 4.88s. You sacrifice top end speed you'd never use anyway in a Jeep. As for the tires, my ProComps do pretty good but I can't compare them to much, they're my first set of big mud tires.

Ditto 1BLKJP's suggestion... if you're deciding between 4.56 and 4.88 for 35" tire, go with 4.88 which is much better at compensating for all the added drag an engine running 35" tires has to put up with. It's an ideal combination, one I ran for years.

Here is another vote for 488 gears with 35 inch tires. Perfect combination. Strong 5th gear.

4.56's and 35's. No major issues. 5th works fine. But I am sure 4.88's would be fine too. I think I turn about 2200-2300 rpm at 65 in 5th gear.. but could be wrong...

My 4.88's just came in and are sitting in the basement. Based on everyone recommendations, I couldn't go with 4.56's.

Am I to understand then, that you can run all this good stuff (4.88's,etc.) with the stock D35/D30 set up? - Jeepthing270 what axles are you running when this is all said and done?

I believe it depends on the ratio that came stock. i.e. if you have 3.73s you can fit up to a 4.56 but with 3.07 you would have to change the carrier....Jerry, guys, is this correct??

Anyone know typically what the TJ Sahara package came with in '98? I'm guessin 3.73's. I guess I'll find this weekend when I pull it all apart, but 4.56's would good with my 33's!

should be 3.73, thats whats in my 00 sport. all you have to do is crawl under and look at the diff. cover, there should be a metal tag (on the left side on mine) that will tell you

I called the local dealer and gave them my vin. With it they were able to verify the gear ratio, which was 3.07 on my 98' Sport

The D30 in a TJ/YJ is limited to a 4.88 as the deepest gear. The D35 can actually fit a 5.13, but since the 30 can't then 4.88 is the deepest you are going to be able to go with that combo.

I'm not 100% sure what the carrier break over is on the 35, but the 30's is 3.55 so you won't have to change the carrier to put 4.88's in it.
