4.88's

Looking to upgrade gears to 4.88's here soon I hope. I'm already familiar with the pros. Any cons to be concerned about. As well does anyone have advise on a good retailer (for lack of better words) to get them from and a good brand I guess idk much about gears as far as manufacturers go. Anyway any advise would be wonderful

About $1,200 to$1,800 at a shop and if you have a friend with a bearing press and trust your self you can do it and save a lot of $$$$ gears are about $200 a axle... I have set up countless gears first time makes you nervous but it is not hard...

That seems like an awful lot. But I have no clue. And unfortunately no friends w/ equipment like that. What do u do about manufacturer warranty if u install yourself. And are there any major cons to 4.88's

The big cost is the warranty on parts and labor.... and the parts are usually covered under manufacturer warranty when u buy them and do it yourself

I went with superior 4.88's gears. they have been great so far. I would recommend not doing it yourself unless you are a very good mechanic. They are hard to get perfect so you don't chip teeth and ruin them with in the first few miles, put that liability on the shop. my $.02

Even very good mechanics are not always up to the task of installing ring & pinion gears, it takes lots of experience to do that particular job properly. Even very good R&P guys don't always get the gears set up right the first time.

I have installed 6 ring and pinion setups including my own front axle when I chewed the teeth off the ring gear.

Jerry is right I take about 3hrs and countless times of pulling it out and putting it all back in adjusting shims to set the ride pattern on the ring gear right and I am still nervous first 300miles.

Well I have a press that I used for my gear install. It leaks oil but works, it's taking up space and I've been trying to get rid of it.

If you choose to do it yourself you could have it for dirt cheap.

Edit: I'm in Longmont BTW.

I'm in denver as well, man...

Unfortunately not skilled in this area but theres a guy in parker that can do gears for you for a nice price. he does great work and has worked on my friends jeeps as well. As soon as i get money he'll be doing mine.

His price for a ford 8.8 axle installed with 4.88 gears and regearing the front to match is 1500
