does any body know how reliable the 2.5L straight 4s that jeep used in the early tj? i know the 4.0 are basically bullet proof, but how bout them 4 bangers?

I have heard both good and bad things about them. My YJ had the 4 banger, and I never had any problems with it (And it got abused rather regularly). I have, however, seen some that needed a lot of work that had less miles than mine did too, but then again that could go for any motor really.
Now, that being said, after getting my TJ with the 6 in it I will never go back ;)

Got one now with the 5.13 gears it moves ok and gas is not to bad. I think I picked up some mileage with them.

look at craigs list and every 4 cyl say "rebiult motor" or new motor" and then look to see how many miles are on the body, and for example most of them say around 100,000 miles(give or take a little) so that means the motor blew around 100,000 miles!!! Sounds pretty shity to me.

mines at 118k and i love it! might not have the ump like the 6 but she kicks it into gear when she wants. and off road wise handles exceptional too. plus, if you're not looking to regear soon, you start with 4.10 gearing, so throw on some 31s if they're not already on. most peeps on here wont admit it, but even with their 4 liters, when you're sitting on 3.07 gears with anything greater than 33's. we'll they'd prob wish they were sitting in your shoes instead.

My guess is they did not replace their timing belts ay 90K and once they fail there goes the engine. They are called interference engines.
