does any body know how reliable the 2.5L straight 4s that jeep used in the early tj? i know the 4.0 are basically bullet proof, but how bout them 4 bangers?
I have heard both good and bad things about them. My YJ had the 4 banger, and I never had any problems with it (And it got abused rather regularly). I have, however, seen some that needed a lot of work that had less miles than mine did too, but then again that could go for any motor really.
Now, that being said, after getting my TJ with the 6 in it I will never go back
I had one that outlasted 3 jeeps it was in. It was a great little eng. Not the fastest kid on the block but I got great mpg running 37's and 4:88's with the 5spd.
look at craigs list and every 4 cyl say "rebiult motor" or new motor" and then look to see how many miles are on the body, and for example most of them say around 100,000 miles(give or take a little) so that means the motor blew around 100,000 miles!!! Sounds pretty shity to me.
mines at 118k and i love it! might not have the ump like the 6 but she kicks it into gear when she wants. and off road wise handles exceptional too. plus, if you're not looking to regear soon, you start with 4.10 gearing, so throw on some 31s if they're not already on. most peeps on here wont admit it, but even with their 4 liters, when you're sitting on 3.07 gears with anything greater than 33's. we'll they'd prob wish they were sitting in your shoes instead.
People will be biased with what they have. If they could do it again, they would have probably bought the 6cyl. My friend had a four and it struggled to get up to 65 mph on 35's. My 6 easily does 85 on 31s, and can tow more.
Really??? You are going to do a comp of a 6cyl on 31's to a 4 cyl on 35's? ok then... Oh yeah my ram with a v8 gan go faster that your jeep while towing a jeep since we are just tossing out things that aren't the same.
I have had 3 4.0's and a 2.5... The 2.5 is a good little eng. Like I said before not a power house at all and you will need to gear the snot out of it to run bigger tires but over all I would drive one again.
when i bought my 98, engine was bad the jeep had arround 125k miles. lack of maintenance is most likely the culpid, when i drained the oil it was more fluid than water if thats possible.....
MY '97 had a 4 banger and it ran like a sewing machine. Really. It was just under powered. I cannot complain at all about the reliablilty. It had 180k on the odo when I traded it.
I have the 2.5 with 140,000 miles and runs fine with no problems, just a gear issue.
