I have heard both good and bad things about them. My YJ had the 4 banger, and I never had any problems with it (And it got abused rather regularly). I have, however, seen some that needed a lot of work that had less miles than mine did too, but then again that could go for any motor really.
Now, that being said, after getting my TJ with the 6 in it I will never go back

the 2.5 is just as bullet proof, and lasts just as long as the 4.0. it is a work horse motor, its just a little wimpy.

I had one that outlasted 3 jeeps it was in. It was a great little eng. Not the fastest kid on the block but I got great mpg running 37's and 4:88's with the 5spd.

look at craigs list and every 4 cyl say "rebiult motor" or new motor" and then look to see how many miles are on the body, and for example most of them say around 100,000 miles(give or take a little) so that means the motor blew around 100,000 miles!!! Sounds pretty shity to me.

mines at 118k and i love it! might not have the ump like the 6 but she kicks it into gear when she wants. and off road wise handles exceptional too. plus, if you're not looking to regear soon, you start with 4.10 gearing, so throw on some 31s if they're not already on. most peeps on here wont admit it, but even with their 4 liters, when you're sitting on 3.07 gears with anything greater than 33's. we'll they'd prob wish they were sitting in your shoes instead.

My guess is they did not replace their timing belts ay 90K and once they fail there goes the engine. They are called interference engines.

the old 2.5 did not have a belt, the new minivan 2.4 built on the neon motor platform has the belt.

i'd put my money on the fact that no one changed the oil on the motors that go. both motors will last forever if mantained.

The 2.5L isn't an interference engine, is it? Haven't had to remove the head on mine yet.

no, 2.5 is not, and has a timing chain. 2.4 is and has a belt.

Didn't think so, I knew it was a chain.

It's a strong engine, but slower than the 4.0.

i was not so lucky. My son's 1999 SE TJ 2.5L 4 cylinder engine was replaced recently.

had way less than 100k miles.

The mechanic said I should have found and bought a 6 cylinder instead.

People will be biased with what they have. If they could do it again, they would have probably bought the 6cyl. My friend had a four and it struggled to get up to 65 mph on 35's. My 6 easily does 85 on 31s, and can tow more.

Really??? You are going to do a comp of a 6cyl on 31's to a 4 cyl on 35's? ok then... Oh yeah my ram with a v8 gan go faster that your jeep while towing a jeep since we are just tossing out things that aren't the same.

I have had 3 4.0's and a 2.5... The 2.5 is a good little eng. Like I said before not a power house at all and you will need to gear the snot out of it to run bigger tires but over all I would drive one again.

We did not tear down the failed engine to diagnose the root cause.

An original Chrysler/Jeep engine was not in stock and was no longer available in Maryland at the time.

My son was eager to get back on the road so I bought a Jasper remanufactured engine that came with a warranty.

I had to weigh the total cost, labor, time, and inconvenience to rebuilding the original or going with the remanufacture replacement.

I really wanted to try a diesel conversion but haven't found a qualified shop yet.

Actually yes. I was compairing the output of the two vehicles and engines, because the thread got into the capabilities of the engines. If I was compairing Rams then I would have said get a v8 Ram... but we were talking about Jeeps. Yes the 6cyl eng has more capability than the 4, but the 4 cyl is a realiable engine as well.

when i bought my 98, engine was bad the jeep had arround 125k miles. lack of maintenance is most likely the culpid, when i drained the oil it was more fluid than water if thats possible.....
