4 spd (3spd with overdrive) auto trans in a TJ 97-02?

Looking for some help on this one. Have you or know someone who put a 4spd (3spd with overdrive) auto trans in a TJ 97-02?

most people do the AW4 swap out of an XJ. I can't imagine anyone would actually swap to a 42RLE.

AW-4 Transmission Swap - 1

Thanks, I'll read through Stu's article.

Change of plans. Going with the Teraflex Low 231 HD Transfer Case.

Is there any difference in the Aw-4 tranny in the XJ compared to the one in the Cherokee?
Thanks!

One and the same, a Cherokee is an XJ.

I'm curious...

Is the AW-4 different than what I have in my 97 automatic? And would it be wise to look for one since I have 130k miles on her?

If your '97 Automatic is a Wrangler, then yes your 32RH 3-speed automatic and the AW4 4-speed automatic that only comes in Cherokees and Grand Cherokees are totally different types of transmissions.

If you are thinking your automatic is a 4-speed due to a third slight additional drop in RPMs you can feel/hear once you reach cruising speeds, that is caused by the torque converter locking up which drops the engine RPMs by about 150.

Would it be worthwhile to change it out to an AW-4?

Because my TJ is a daily driver and for various other reasons, I am going to do the AW4 swap into my TJ. I had a 1994 Cherokee Sport and loved the I-6 and the Auto tranny. Stu's article was very helpful and complete in what has to be done. By year's end I might have a nice 5 speed to sell.
Jerry, Thanks for all the help you give on this forum!

I never found a newer 4spd auto for my 2000 TJ. So, Out came the 2000 3spd automatic and in went the 2005 6spd manual transmission sitting next to Atlas II transfer case. Can't wait to pick it up. Thanks to jeepspeedshop.com , home of the Hemi conversions. There's at least a half dozen in there.
