4 Wheel Drive

Hi, my names Bryan, I just brought a 2001 jeep wrangler SE and was wondering if there is a why that when I put it in 4 wheel drive. To put it into full time not part time like it shows on the dash when it engages.?

its not a full time system.
the light turns on when you in 4WD mode.

I think I understand your question. (Not the easiest thing to do). Your jeep is not a true full time 4 wheel drive vehicle. When it's slick or you are offroading or what ever you can use the four wheel drive. You can drive long distances in 4 wheel drive if you are in snow etc. You should not just put it in 4 wheel drive and drive around on dry pavement. That is why it says part time 4 wheel drive, just use it part of the time. If it's slick out use it, once the conditions get better back to 2wd. When the light says part time that means the 4wd is engaged and will stay engaged, you are just supposed to always leave it there.

You should not be driving on hard surface in 4WD. You will destroy your drivetrain.

do not drive in partial or full time 4wd on dry surfaces for long periods of time.

I recently purchased a 2002 Jeep Wrangler X and love it. We just got some snow/ice in Atlanta and I am about to drive in it. I will use the 4wd but since my jeep did not come equipped with the owners manual would like to know (much like this thread) some basics to engage the 4wd. I am assuming to use clutch to engage when pulling on lever to engage. Any help is appreciated as I have a '94 model some time ago and pretty easy to engage and would assume easier for this newer model.

Push in clutch, pull lever back into 4H, release clutch.

for 4L:
from 4H, slow to about 2-3 mph, push in clutch, put shifter in nuetral, pull back and to the right on the transfercase lever. It might grind a little bit going in, but you should feel it catch. Shift back into gear and release clutch.

1. As indicated above (and I think you know), the TJ does not have a Full Time system.

To be clear, and a lot of people confuse the terms.

Part Time - The system should only be used PART of the time. The system should only be used on loose surfaces. The F/R axles are locked and rotate at the same speed. When the vehicle turns, the axles will not try to rotate at different rates but cannot because they are locked. In this situation, the tires will give. On a loose surface, this is not a problem. On a surface with grip i.e. dry pavement, this will put strain on the drivetrain components.

Full Tme (or AWD) - The system can be used FULL time (24/7 forever) The F/R axles are engaged but the center differential allows slip between the axles and is not a problem in turns on dry surfaces.

thanks for quick reply and all worked well...follow up question as you mention to go from 4H to 4L while 2-3mph....what are the impacts if you put directly in 4L when starting up? Also, can you go out of 4H or 4L while driving as I note posts indicating issue when 4L is engaged on dry roads as some roads are dry for a strecth before some more icy roads come up? thanks again!

You can also shift into or out of 4L while stationary, though you may feel more resistance in the shifter when you do so. In some situations, you may get to neutral but then the shifter just will not go into 4L; if this happens, turn off the engine to complete the shift, then restart the Jeep and continue on your way.

This occasional binding is why it is suggested that you be barely moving, around 2-3 MPH, to make this shift. Do not try shifting into or out of 4L at speeds greater than this.

As I just mentioned, you cannot shift out of 4L at any speed over ~ 3 MPH. However, you can shift freely between 2WD and 4HI at any speed up to 55 MPH. You don't even need to press the clutch, at least not if you're traveling in a straight line. Just lift off the throttle, shove the lever, observe the indicator light to make sure it comes on or goes off (depending what you're doing), then get back on the gas. Easy.

Also make sure if you're moving down the road that your rear tires are not spinning faster than your front tires when engaging 4wd. While in motion the front and rear tires need to be spinning at the same speed. Now if you were stuck and the rear tires are spinning even the slightest bit and the front tires are stationary the gears will grind in the transfer case.

You can go from 2h to 4h without pushing in the clutch. You can go to 2h from 4h without pushing in the clutch too. Just don't be spinning the rear tires when trying to engage the 4 wheel drive.

Yep... the reason for clutching is mainly to ensure the wheels are spinning at the same speed, but clutching isn't necessary provided you just let off the gas and ensure you have no wheel spin. If you have wheel spin, it may grind like a s.o.b.

Also as mentioned, shifting into 4Lo...you don't need to be rolling, I prefer to be stopped on a level surface, but sometimes it won't engage smoothly while stopped so people will get a smoother engagement if they're just BARELY rolling.

My lights that show if engaged or not are out. But my 4wd engages fine . Do u guys think it's the bulb?

could be the switch
does it turn on when you do the diagnose mode by pressing the button on the dash and turn the key on?

No it does not I just did it and all the lights came on exept those. Also I see that the setbelt comes on. ( is there a sensor that I can fix for the seatbelt light to come on and off when ever u use the belt)?

so the 4wd bulb is out.
for the seatbelt light, Ive been wondering as well. mine comes on when I turn the key on then goes out doesnt matter seatbelt is on or off.
there is a plug under the driver seat that your seatbelt switch plugs in near the center console.

Hmm thnx I'll see if the dealer has those bulbs in stock.. And for the seatbelt I'm gonna see if unplugging it and plugging it works who knows Wat that might be lol

dont go to the dealer, any auto store have those bulbs. it takes a whole 5 minutes to remove the cluster. very easy to do ( I say that but still havent changed mine...lol but I dont really care )

so i replaces the bulbs and still no light. no i have to tacle the switch, does anyone know hwere the switch is or looks like? maybe a thread on how to replace it i cant find one
