4WD Problems

This winter is the first time using the 4WD after repossessing the Jeep from my mother. while driving on the snowy streets i switched into 4hi on the fly at about 30mph, after about a mile i hear a clicking noise that progressively gets louder and then suddenly, pop! and a jerk. afterwards i stopped and shifted into 2wd in neutral and nothing bad happened. again stopped and shifted into 4hi, 2 miles then pop and jerk. makes the noise weather i am accelerating, braking, coasting, in gear, out of gear. i have used it one other time since then shifting on the fly at about 25mph and no problems but i am still afraid to use it if i have to because i dont want to grind down the gears or cause excessive wear. am i doing something wrong? is it just worn down and picky and i must make sure its fully seated into 4hi? whats wrong with my baby !

Is it jumping out of 4WH?
Also I see you said snowy streets, did you drive on any dry patches? 4WD doesn't like running on dry roads, can cause a bind in the T case.

Also check the bushings at the T case shifter, if they are worn, it could be that you're not getting the T case all the way into 4WH, and it's letting it pop back out.

im not sure if it popped out of 4 or finally popped into 4. and yes there were spots where the city trucks had laid salt but the majority of the streets were fresh snow. i will take into consideration the dryness of the road next time i need to use it.


and also, i have a standard and when shifting into 2nd and 3rd with the clutch pedal fully depressed i can hear and feel the gears hitting each other before fully seating into gear. does that indicate that my clutch may be going out?

I'm having a similar problem with my 88 Wrangler. Is there an good way to fix it without cracking open the transfer case?

This is the linkage to the transfer case and up to the 4WD lever. my linkage is all twisted up because of the body mount and or dropping the skid plate. This bar slides back and forth. because of the angle everything is at. look at pic 2


it slips out of this hole and you lose all your leverage and it will not engage it 2WD, or 4WD. still looking for a relocating bracket for the body
