4wd winter weather

So, I used the 4wd for the first time on my '99 TJ today, epic fail. I had it in low going up the street and to be honest there really wasn't enough snow to warrent 4wd but I wanted to try it out before a real snow hit. I was fish tailing all over the place at extremely low speeds. At the light I put it in high. I had a little more control but not enough to make me comfortable so I dropped out of it at the next light. I noticed that I still had less control then I'd like so I'm guessing it was in part due to the road conditions, not just my poor driving in 4wd. I'm guessing I need more weight and I'm looking into snow tires since I drive all day in the winter due to my job. Help! What else am I missing. What kind of tires should I get? I don't have a lift, and my wheels are 15s, but they need to be replaced as well and I'm thinking about doing those at the same time...

You're gonna have to give us more info. What kind of tires do you have and hows the tread depth? Were you going uphill? Was it icy or just snow covered?

Also 4L is not meant for road use.. As to tires it really depends on how much you offroad your jeep as to what tires to look at.. So without knowing how you use your Jeep.. I'd look at the GY Duratracs and Cooper Discoverer ST's

More weight wont help, will just make more you need to lug and more you need to slow/stop. The jeep will feel easy to kick out because it is a very short wheel base. Also low tire tread and lack of limited slip or lockers will make 4WD seem like a joke. Ive had good luck with my 30" thin BF AT KOs in the crazy snow ive had here in southeast PA in the past few years. Even with out lockers or limited slip ive been able to drive through 2 feet of unplowed roads. Just avoid ice at all cost, almost nothing helps with ice.

It's all about tires and the pressure you run in them in the winter time...And it should be hard to lose control in 4wd with good tires and the right pressure like said above...But in ice you are hopeless unless you have some studs in your tires...

Thanks guys that helps a lot. My tires are 30'', the depth is "ok" but not great. They are reg stock tires, pro comp. I'd like a beefier tire without lifting the car. I'm ok with snow tires, or anything with a hardier tread. So what pressure should I set them at, how much psi lower then the recommended, 5?

haha @xJ... I meant truck "cough cough" ... yes, not a lot, but yes, I'd like to. I've only had it since Sept...

oh, and no, I was not going up hill, the road was "slushy", not icy or snow covered. I think I've boiled it down to the tires, because it also slips some in the rain and I have to give it more clutch to keep traction. So, what tires to get is the question. I'm kinda tired of looking like the Jeep fool that has stock tires...

Post up some pics of your current set up and what your goal ans bbudget is so we have something to work with

I would recommend Goodyear duratracs as well, very happy with mine and amazing all-terrain tire. Beefy look, not a lot of road noise and as far as pressure these are rated at 35psi, in the winter I bring mine down to 25psi or less works great...

How old are the tires? Tires become aged at about 4 years and after that are pretty useless for snow/rain. Not enough flex. Also, at about 50% tire wear they lose the siping and that is what gives most of the surface control (skidding, rain, ice, etc.).

From what I am guessing of your use you might want to check into a moderate treat A/T with a lot of siping that is deep.

If you are not going to put a lot of miles per year on the jeep, do not go for the high mileage (60,000 mile tread life) tires. If you are only going to put 10,000 miles per year on, then a 30,000 to 40,000 mile tire makes more sense. You want to wear them out, not age them out and throw them away at 50% tread left because they are hard.

Cieck with a couple of tire places that are well respected in your area and get their advice. They deal with it all the time and can give you good advice.

If it gets bad enough that the moderately aggressive A/T tires won'd serve, then look into a good set of 4 wheel chains.

Good luck. Weather looks like you are going to need it.

There is no set up... that's the problem. I'm not sure I'm looking to lift it just yet, A: budget B: because I drive a lot and gas mileage is an issue. (Not so much an issue that it kept me from buying my Jeep though My budget for tires right now isn't more then like $8-$900, my question is, is there any tire out there I can get besides the 30x9.5 R15. Also, I need new wheels, so I could get 16s, if it would open up my options. I looked into the goodyear dura tracs but they tell me they won't fit... I'd really like something like that though, that doesn't look like a stock tire.

At your stock height on stock rims or aftermarket rims 31x10.5/15 and under duratracs along with every other tire will fit all day long 365 days a year. If you go to a 16in rim you can run up to a 245/75/16 without issue and perhaps even a 265/75/16 but it will be just a little tighter on the height

Who ever told you Gy duratracs of 31x10.5/15 or smaller wont fit don't know anything about tires

I just saw your stock rims.. get the new rims before switch over as I see your stock rims are the lower end stock rims offered on jeeps at the time your jeep was made and looks like those rims have seen better days. Look for a rim with 3.75-4.25in of back spacing and at stock height you will be able to run any tire up to a 31x10.5/15 or 245/75/16 (maybe even 265/75/16). also with the new rims as long as they have the correct bs if you ever go up in tire size then you will just need to change the tires and not have to worry about rims again..

Don't bother with the new tires on those old steel rims..

If you are really worried about the snow, keep the stock rims, get some snow tires....I mean REAL, SUV/Truck snow tires....NOT offroad tires. Go as narrow as you can.

I have a set of Nitto snow tires on my Ford Escape. 300% better then the OEM's.

In the Spring, switch back to your other, larger tires and rims.

thanks guys, I've decided on the GY Duratracs, (I get them tomorrow) I think all around, they'll fit for what I need. I'm going to go an inch bigger and get the 31x10.5... as for the rims, I had originally planned on getting new rims with the tires but my tire guy suggests waiting to put them on in the spring, he'll do it for free. Dude, you all are invaluable... thanks again

I stuck with my stock 15" wheels, but I've got an Apex edition. I ended up putting a small 2" spring lift and went with 32" X 11.50's (Maxxis Bighorns). I still have plenty of room to jump up to a larger tire if I decide to and, they're set up to take studs if you run in icier conditions as well. I'm still kinda a noob at this, but I'm learning a lot in a SHORT period of time on these forums thanks to these guys!! (PS, this was before the 2" spring lift!!)

I've got 33" Duratracs...i made a review thread here the other day about them, but just to give you a quick summary. You won't be disappointed this winter...those things are amazing for winter road conditions. I was watching cars slipping and sliding through intersections and spinning like crazy leaving stop signs. I'd floor it and it'd be like, *Chirp* *Chirp* *DIG!* Of course I was in 4wd...in 2wd, they'll spin like a mofo. Run 4hi on the streets when you have enough slippage...only use 4lo if you're really stuck...throw it in and then usually you don't wanna give it any guess...just let the engine torque make it "crawl" out.

Also...don't forget your speedo will read a little slower than you're actually going with the 31's. You can change the gear out to compensate for that. It's not a tough job...definitely can be done in a few minutes if you or a friend have basic mechanical abilities. Don't let anyone convince you to go any bigger than 31's without a lift. They may fit, but they may also eat your fenders over larger bumps. 15" wheels are fine for the tires...the problem could be the backspacing. With 31x10.5" tires...you may have minor rubbing, but can install a couple washers behind the steering stops to prevent from turning the wheel far enough to rub. Yes, it will affect your turn radius but trust me...you won't notice it unless you're pulling the tightest u-turns ever at 2mph. lol. If you like the blacked out look...you can get Cragar Soft 8 black steel wheels for like $50/each.

You'll love what an aggressive looking tire will do with your Jeep...it'll lift it up a little bit, plus it'll give it a much more aggressive look. It's amazing what just TIRES can do with the looks of a vehicle.

I've never had any problems out of my General Grabber AT2's Unless I bury the Jeep up to the hood, then not a lot is gonna drive out under its own

I got GY Duratracs. 31's with a backspace of 3.75 on pro comps. No rubbing at all. Now I need some snow.
