4x4 light issue

Hello to all-
I have been researching my issue in this forum for awhile with some answers. Here is my issue: My 4x4 engages but with no light. I took the gauge cluster apart and found out that there was no bulb in the fulltime 4x4 slot, but there was one in the partime slot. So I put one in, put it back together, and the light still will not come on. I haven't checked the 4x4 sensor yet. I was just wondering if there is anything else I can check before I start troubleshooting the sensor. Is there any fuses I need to check, or which fuses need to be installed, etc. Thanks for any help offered.

Mine has not worked in years. I hope it's something simple. If not, who cares, I can look down and see if it is in 4 wheel or not.

I used to have the opposite problem. The light would come on for no reason when I was in 2wd. It was still under warranty so I had the dealer fix it... twice. Apparently whatever goes from the handle to the dash to indicate what lights to turn on is crap and can break easily.

I figure if you can feel the difference when your in 4 wheel drive to 2 wheel drive maybe you shouldn't be driving a truck . Really mine has not worked for well since I bought it. That light would annoy me personally.

On another thread they said to test the light. With the key off hold in the odometer button while doing this turn the key to the on position. This will test every thing in the cluster. You'll see each light come on one at a time then the gauges will move half way then all the way. I thought it was cool. I found out my light worked but never investigated further.

Same issue here as well. Started last winter when I was in 4x4 the light started flickering. I could even wiggle the handle to get the light to do it. Eventualy the light just stopped working. Stil no issue getting it into 4x4 just no light. Like stated about I have been told that some sensor in ther (much like the multi function fog light switch) is complete crap and breaks all the time. Never bothered fixing it.

Correct I believe it is righ next to the shifter under the truck on a wire or a set of wires that goes to the cluster.

The switch for the 4WD indicator light is located on top of the transfer case, above the front output shaft. It's about 21 bucks at Advance Auto Parts.

the full time 4x4 light should never light up in a wrangler since wranglers dont have full time 4x4. some cherokees do and since they use the same cluster thats why it has a slot for full time 4x4. a wrangler is ONLY part time 4x4.

It wasn't that hard at all. All you have to do is remove the four nuts that hold the transmission mount to the skid plate, then remove the six bolts that hold the skid plate up. I also braced the transmission and transfer case with jacks, it helps. The switch is located on the drivers side of the transfer case. It looks like a nut with a electrical connector connected to it. I bought it at a local dealer for about $30. You can also get it at autozone. Just ask for a 4wd switch. I bought from a dealer because they had it in stock, and autozone didn't. I hope my terminology is correct, more of a helicopter mechanic then a automobile mechanic. Hope this helps!
