Question 4x4 Questions

So the other day we got a lot of snow and I had to give one of my friends a ride since his car got stuck. A few things I noticed (First time I ever used 4x4)...

First thing is when I engaged 4H no light came on? I have a 2004 Sport, I'm not sure this is normal or not but every other car I've driven will usually have a light to come one the dash that says 4x4, or 4wheel part time, etc but nope I had no light and I was 90% sure it was engaged.

Second thing is how do I switch into 4L? I know thats for offroad use only or w.e but the streets were so bad I wasnt even sure if i was on pavement or not! I tried so many different ways but the lever will not budge past 4H.

Sorry if any of these have been asked I know the second one has but I couldnt find an answer that really helped me. :/ Thanks in advance!

it helps to get into 4lo if you're rolling slowly....but you should have gotten a light in 4H

its common for the sending unit to go bad for your 4x4 light.

for 4lo, you have to be rolling at a slow pace, under 3 mph, and be in neutral

4lo should never really be needed on the street

Forgot to mention this is on an automatic tranny. I also could not get the 4x4 lever into Neutral it would only go into 4H or 2H.

So basically I cant be completely stopped or in Drive? and the 4x4 lever will only shift into 2H or 4H when i tried it. Automatic shifter in N,D, and parked, even tried with the engine off

sounds like you have some binding, the stock TC linkage is a joke, IMO. has a BL been added to the jeep?

it should work when completely stopped as well, but you may hear some grinding

When you slid it into 4H, to go to neutral you have to slide the handle to the right and then pull back like the picture on the handle. You did do that? It should go.

What Plowboy said - you do have to slide it a little to the right to get it to go into neutral, and from there it should go into 4 low. And your auto shifter should also be in Neutral. I am almost always completely stopped when I go into 4 low, but you can be rolling slowly. But like other people said, you shouldn't really ever need 4 low on the street.

The jeep is completely stock at the moment. I'll give it another try later and see if it'll go. Tbh idr if I pulled it to the right or not lol Im so used to my dad's old Durango where you just slides the thing easily backwards. As for actually using 4L ive been told its mostly just for when you get stuck or something. I just want to make sure it all works as it should, I just bought the the thing a few months ago.

Hey man make sure the auto is in neutral. I too am new to 4x4 and found that the only way to engage 4l is in neutral.

Alright so I guess you do push right then pull it back because the lever does seem to be fully functioning now. (Feel like an idiot) lol

However I dont have any sign that it engaged (didnt actually drive with it just tested it out in the driveway) and Im starting to think no light illuminates on mine as I dont see anywhere on the dash that says anything like that (even with the lights off I can kinda see the words on the dash cant find a 4wd one) anyone got a pic where it illuminates on the dash?

Just did it now..

First it says 5oF 4.0
Then it says No FAULES

There were a couple of lights that did not light up like ABS, Front Lock, Rear Lock.

4WD did light up in the top right corner.

What does all this mean?

you dont have abs or lockers, so there's nothing wrong there.

it looks like it is the 4x4 switch that is malfunctioning, as the 4x4 light works. pretty common issue, my gf's jeep does the same thing. we just ignore it as you can tell when you're in 4x4, others replace the switch.

When in 4H and 4L will it always say "Part Time" on the dash? Or something along those lines?

some say 4x4, some say part time. all 4x4 wranglers have part time 4x4 or we would have awd vehicles.

My dads 99' durango is rwd but you can engage 4wd part time or 4wd fulltime or 4L. Just thought id throw that out there.

The wrangler is supposed to just say " 4WD " in the top right corner as I saw it light up doing the diagnostic.
