5.2 engine Swap; why not a 4.6 stroker?

I have the opportunity to get a 1998 GC TSI with a 5.2 and 48k miles on it. Everything works. I'm aware of what all needs to be done for the conversion.

After reading up the specs of this engine, it only makes 220 hp and less than 300 ft lbs of tq.

I already have a 4.0 so why not replace it with a stroker that makes 270 hp and 325 ft lbs of torque. The overall cost would be about the same with much less headaches.

So my question is, why would someone go with the 318 over the stroker?

Golden's stroker requires 91 octane. Not a big deal IMO.

If paying for premium fuel isn't a big deal to you, then by all means do the stroker. It's a much easier upgrade. Sure the V8 is going to have the cool factor, but so will the stroker... and gas mileage will suck either way.

I'd look at the dyno results on both and pick whichever had the most torque at lower RPM's IMO.

I would go with the Stroker. Nothing else to try and match up. Will drop right in.

I have the 5.2 swap and it is amazing. I would be suspicious of the hp claims of that stroker 80hp out of only .7 liters is a bit bold. I replaced a 4 cylinder so a V8 was a no brainer with the same work involved to do a 6.

Also the specs you gave for the 5.2 are stock numbers that can definitely go way up from there .

I had a 5.2 zj a while back and while it deffinitely sounded mean it was actually pretty gutless for a v8, especially compared to modern day v8's. You can obtain 5.2 numbers out of a lot of modern day v6's now.

I do understand the cool factor though and there are plenty 5.2's to be had relatively cheap too. That said if i were to go through the process of putting a v8 in my tj I wouldnt choose spending the time and money to fit a 5.2, there are better choices imo.

You can build a stroker to run on normal gas.. octane requirements have to do with dynamic compression ratio
