Hey all,
I'm starting to make plans to swap out my 4.0 this summer. I'm very interested in the 5.9 magnum swap and getting a golen 4.6 stroker. I am looking for a relatively "cheap" swap meaning no more than a few grand. The only thing that worries me about the 5.9 is the wiring and fuel delivery. I know a 4.6 would be a relatively easy swap, but my tranny is in need of a rebuild, so costs go up there. How hard is the wiring for the 5.9 to actually do? I would definitely send off the harness to have it modified. I appreciate any info you guys have to offer

Personally, I'd stick with the 6, but I never was a Chrysler fan.
Just much easier and cheaper in the long (and short) run.

So if you do the 5.9? What tranny are you considering? You might try to find a wrecked v8 Dakota with an auto....but I think they might be a 5.2 v8

Ideally, i would get a nv4500, but if I can't find one, I would settle for a 46rh. Would finding a donor be the best option, or would getting the engine, trans, ecu, and harness from a salvage yard be my best bet?

I would search for both options. Since you have 5-6 months, you can keep an eye out for a donor opportunity.

Two of my friends who have done motor swaps say they engine and tranny is the cheap part...it's all the little things that nickle and dime ya that add up very quickly. So having the whole donor vehicle can "help" keep cost downs...plus then you will also have all the emissions stuff.

But you still have drivelines, gearing, and exhaust system to consider as well.
