5 speed Vs. 6 speed

I can't wait until i get a TJ, however i have a question. I have been looking around and seen that there are 5 and 6 speed TJs. I know i am dead set on getting a 6 cylinder and eventually get 33''s. So what transmission should i be looking for? What tranny will do better in the meantime before i re-gear with the 33"s? I just wanna know what i should look for and what to stay away from. Thanks for any help.

The 6-speed is geared lower (produces slightly higher engine RPMs) so it would do better with larger tires before regearing the axles. Due to its torque converter which gives what is in effect an infinitely low first gear ratio, an automatic would do better yet.

I've driven both and i like both. My 99 tj and my 98 xj had a 5 speed, my 06 rubi as a 6.

The 5 was a smooth shifting tranny, never had any problems with it...my 99 tj had 165,000 on it when i sold it and my xj had 216,000 on it when i sold it and both were still going strong and shifting smooth when they were sold.

My 06 rubi has the 6 speed which is love/hate for me...its notchy feeling and has a bit of a hard shift when its cold from 1st to second. Its really not that bad, but its noticeable and its just not as smooth as my old 5 speeds. I really love the gear ratios of the 6 though. It has a super low 1st gear which is fantastic for crawling, especially combined with the 4.10 gears and 4:1 tcase on the rubi.

Thanks for the replies every one. In the six speed is 6th gear with larger tires as useless on the highway as everyone says it is? Also, did did some years have the 6 speed and some years with the five? Sorry for sounding like such a noob but i need to learn somehow.

If you look in the stickies, the last one is the FAQ. It will tell you what drivetrain options where available with wich years. I have an 06 rubi with the 6speed and 33's. I use the od everyday on the freeway, but without the 4.10 gears i dont think it would be as useable.

I have a 06 6-speed with 33" MT's and 3.07 gears. Its alright in town, but interstate I stay in 5th just to keep the RPM's up so hills dont kill me as bad, im re-gearing here soon though

I have an '06 X with a 4.0l and 6 spd manual, 3.73 gears on 33" Duratrac tires.

I like the 6 speed. Like they said, 1st gear is a granny gear. I usually skip it and just start out in 2nd gear.
I cruise on the interstate at around 75 mph in 6 gear with no issues. I live in Louisiana so it is pretty flat, but we have bridges. I haven't noticed any issues with it not being able to handle inclines.

But yeah, I have come to think of my 6 spd as a 5 spd with a super low granny gear.
I work in an office building and park on the 5th floor of the garage, I drive up all 5 floors in 2nd gear every day. My old Ford Ranger 4 cyl/5 spd couldn't climb it as easy in 1st. lol

Woo hoo...gotta love Louisiana. Every day commuting is like a mild trail run with the crappy roads.

For the op, it I had a 5 in my yj, that shredded 5th gear on 33's and a six in my jk that did just fine on 32's. I also liked the lower gear ratio in the 6 speed. Slightly lower, but noticeable. If you go auto I would look for a 3 speed, my 4 speed sucks in overdrive with 33's and 3.73's.

I have a 4.0, 6spd, 3.73, with 285-75-16 (33s)
6th gear kind of sucks to me. Im going to regear, I love how it ran on 31s that only measured 29in

Knowing that there are about 12 dialects in the nawlins area, I'm pretty sure I am the only person on this thread that laughed out loud when I read that.

You've got
Kennah brah
Metry
Nawlins
Da wes bank

Sorry to hijack the thread :-(

Excellent choice. The straight six with either manual trans is a good decision!

Good Luck!
