6 cylinder VS. 4 cylinder

I've been looking to buy a 97-2000 wrangler for a while now and I was wondering if the 4 banger version is even worth spending the money on. The 4 cylinder is a little more affordable but my dad owns a 6 cylinder and i love how much power it has. Any suggestions?

If it's strictly for offroading, the four-banger will be fine. But if you're on the highway a lot, you'd be better off with the 4.0L six cylinder engine. The smaller four-banger is plain frustrating at 65-70 mph.

4.0/5speed will get ~16 in the stock TJ, 2.5/5speed will get 20 with 30's. Both of my 2.5's are identical mileage wise.

wow, my 2.5 didn't get noticeably better mileage than 4.0. not worth the savings in gas imo

Well, I'm a cheap SOB so I take it real easy on the skinny pedal. Drives my wife nuts when I get the overhead console in her ZJ up around 23.5 mpg and she can never get it above 19..... the look I can feel makes my right ear burn...

haha, makes sense. w/ 33's on my old 4 banger, i had to mash the skinny pedal just to keep up in traffic.

had both. don't bother with the 4cyl. i am pulling mine out in favor of something else entirely.

the 6 has plenty of power for whatever you will need.

gas mileage is right about the same in stock form from what i have been able to tell.

i will say this, add 33s on stock gearing with the 6cyl, and you will be fine even on the highway powerwise. add 33s on stock gearing with the 4cyl and you won't move.
