6 Speed Gearbox Questions

Hello, I have a 65th Edition Wrangler TJ (2006)

I am having problems going into reverse, 1 out of maybe 30 times it would not go in all the way and you would rev it and it would spindle away but not move.

Also it is crunchy between 1st and 2nd and sometimes it would pop out of 1st and make a bang.

I have changed the gearbox oil and now wondering if it is the bushes?

I have now found out it while the car is moving and i put the clutch in and hold the stick inbetween neutral and second, it sounds like the clutch is no in and grinds away. It does not do it in any other gear

I've got the same trans, they're very noisy its just the way they are. For the issue of not goin into reverse fully and popping outta first, this is caused by it not being fully in gear, usually you can feel the shifter not go forward far enough and just ease the clutch out maybe a 1/4 of the pedal travel while pushing the shifter into gear and it'll go in no problem!

There must be a reason for this though...

Ive tried holding the gear stick halfway in gear with clutch engaged and it grinds IN EVERY GEAR, What causes this?

I have the same "popping out of 1st problem" actually it's at the shop right now to figure out whats up.

Bad synchros. I got rid of my six speed. Swaped it for a five speed last year when the 6 dropped 4th gear completely

Im wondering how many have this problem? My 6spd shifts fine. Its the same trans thats in the 07-12 jeep. The only difference is the bell-housing has a different pattern.

Were on our second 6 speed. thought about a 5 speed swap but decided to stick with the better ratios in the 6. Mopar remanufactured units run just over 2K.

It is noisy, notchy, and can at times be difficult to shift. It likes to be shifted slowly and deliberately with long clutch intervals. The transmission is also used in some of the smaller Mercedes delivery vans in Europe and is not exactly beloved there either. Early units had a known issue with reverse. (TSB: 21-006-05 FEB 05 M/T (6 Speed) - Won't Stay in Reverse Gear)

The shift forks and synchros are not known for lasting long, particularly if one is in the habit of shifting quickly. One must use the correct fluid - synchromesh (we've tried every brand and despite that some swear there is a difference our transmissions have failed to demonstrate an effect).

I have the 4 banger and the ratios weren't all that great for me. Never used 6th even on the highway It would just bog the engine too much. So the 5 speed just made sense to me.

I do like the ratios in the 6 speed better then the 5 speed i had. But other then that fact ide trade this one back for my 5 speed. Mainly due to the fact of not being able to get a short throw shifter for it. The 6 speed doesnt like goin from 1st to second, and does not like being shifted fast. Other then that though its what you would expect from puttin a truck tranny in a Jeep.
01 TJ. Dana 30/44 4:88's, 4.0 5 speed, 38.5x15 Boggers on 15x10 Streetlocks, CAI, B&M short throw, Neoprene Covers, 4" RC, 3" BL, too much to list and building. >..<

Yeah I'm sure if I had the 4.0 it would have been better.
