Im still on the tj hunt and I have come across a 2006. What do you think about the 6 speed transmission? The jeep is going to be a hunting vehicle and also gonna be driven to work sometimes. No real hard wheeling in its future. Do you think the 6 speed will last as long as the other transmissions offered before 2005?
since posting my question I keep reading horror stories on google!! like popping out of gear grinding from 1 to 2. I drove the one I'm looking at and it seemed fine. its an 06 with 56k they want 9k for it. It looks clean no rust and runs well. Im glad yours is running well
I have the 6spd too. 110k and although the shift from 1 to 2 is a little rough when cold, it is a lot better when it warmed up - and it is a truck transmission after all. I would not let the transmission be the deciding factor if it seems to be in good condition, and since that Jeep has such low miles. One nice feature is that 1st is really low ratio so offroad you can get a lot of torque to the wheels compared to a 5spd.
86,000 miles on my 05 NSG370. It is a truck transmission and getting into reverse is sometimes sticky due to the lack of synchros. But I haven't had any issues. I like how low first is geared. On pavement, I usually start out in 2nd. I also like having 6th gear which is like overdrive. Very handy on the interstate.
6 speed here, 105k miles no issues. Plus I like the reactions I get when people ask about my Jeep, "that has a 6 speed?? I thought only sports cars were equipped with that! " I get that response a lot.
I didn't go over it real well but it seems to be in good shape. Im going back monday to scope it out and probably buy it. any tips on what I should look for?
06s with higher milage than that are selling for 13-15k or above in my area. I would buy that in a hurry if everything checks out.
Look for rust and check and test everything you can like making sure 4L, 4H and 2H work, highway speed driving is Ok, and check underneath the vehicle for things leaking. And have a mechanic you trust go over the vehicle and give you a report.
I have it in my LJ. I agree about 1st to 2nd in the cold. After driving a 5spd 98 civic for so many years, the Jeep trans feels pretty gritty. But as they said, it's a truck. The only problems I had popping out of gear were due to the shift boot, as it would bind up.
I love my 6 spd 2005 TJ. Mine has 75,000 miles, looks new and runs like a top. A little notchy between 1-2 but otherwise a pleasure. Love it so much I'm going to look for a 2015 Anvil Willys unlimited 6 speed.
06 rubi with the 6 speed. 44k miles. I've had no issues shifting this winter. And we've had some cold days (upstate ny)
1-2, 2-3 and 1-3 is all fine and smooth. R is a little tricky sometimes, but it's not synchronized, so no surprise there.
140K miles on mine. Never had a transmission issue. That said buying anything used is a crap shoot. I don't think 6speed problems are inherent to the 6speed. I'd put the blame on a previous owner who abused it/ never learned how to shift/ ......
Nice looking ride, I was ready to pull the trigger on one that color and someone beat me to it. Enjoy it.
4 Degrees here, tranny stiff first couple of miles, but shifted fine, better when it warmed up.
BTW: Go Cyclones....
