Can anyone tell me how to get the shift level knob off the shaft?

You have to remove the cap with the shift pattern first. It's in pretty tight, it helps to heat it with a hair dryer first, especially if you plan to reuse the knob. once the cap is off, there's a nut to remove and then the knob twists off.

Thanks. It's 3:43 am. I'll be giving that a try in the morning.

Yeah be careful taking it out...I knew I'd eventually replace mine but I destroyed the cap getting it off and had to get a new one
