97 Tj

I have been searching for a gently used pavement princess older TJ for quite some time. Not really concerned with color but know that the wife would prefer Red, Silver or Black, in that order. She would prefer an auto also. I was determined to stick to my guns on a well maintained with the 4.0, especially with an auto.

Anyway, local dealer that knows what I am looking for called today and said they got a trade in last night that I might be interested in.

Its a 97 TJ SE with auto trans. Hard and soft tops, AC. With get this 29021 miles. and Red to boot.

I know the 4 banger and auto is the worst mix of the lot. And the dealer is going to ask pretty much HIGH book plus for it.

However I am a repeat buyer with this dealership (3 Cummins Rams over the last 9 years) and this salesman told me I could have it for about 900 below average retail according to NADA I just had to come in and decide before it goes thru detail and lot prep.

The initial intent of this Jeep is to be my commuter (2mi each way) a weekend off road play toy and get passed down to my daughter when she gets her licence in a few years.

I am torn, damn near new 97. Decent price. but a not so good motor trans option. whada ya'll think?

Yea, I hear ya.

If it were a 5spd I wouldn't have given it much thought, I would just tell the wife and kid that they should learn how to drive a manual anyway.

Guess I'll go down and look at it right after work and decide then.

how much? Price can be a major factor. But I agree the 4 banger and the auto combo is not the best...

It took me a little over a year to find the right TJ for me. Its not the color(Bright Jade) that I wanted. But it was the right price. And its just about what you described. Its an Auto 4.0L '97 with 54K, hard&soft tops. Picked it up for a nice $8200. Can't beat that.So if your determined to get a 4.0, I'd stick it out and keep searching.

Well, I went down and looked at it tonight. Turns out it is a 5spd and not an auto (stupid salesman) didn't get there in time to make a decision prior to detail and lot prep. Had to pull it out from under the detailers arms to drive it around for a few miles and crawl under it and check everything out. Everything checked out perfectly, I think this thing still has the tires it rolled off the assembly line with. And I don't think it has ever seen more than a dirt parking lot in its life. Handed it back to the detailers and went off to the office to make a deal. Threw a good cash offer on the table Thats where things went to crap.

The dealership owner comes out and says its off the market, he wants it for his son.

So the search continues............

Thanks for everyones input.........
