Question 97 TJ Performance

I have a 97 TJ with 4.0, 4:10 gears, 33" tires, K&N air filter(stock),5sp., Borla Exhaust with Header. I am experiencing surging/hesitation when giving full throttle lower rpm's (especially 3rd gear on an incline...1300 - 2300rpm's). After you get the rpm's up to upper mid range finally clears up. I have replaced fuel pump, injectors, MAP sensor, Throttle Position Sensor, went from 3:55 to 4:10 gears (suggested from Rock-It), comlete tune up with champion plugs. Better performance overall BUT did not correct surging/hesitation. Tailpipe burns black and feels seems rich. One of the Jeep dealers suggested that the ECM may need to be re-programmed but was not sure if the technical bulletins covered the exact problem that I have(re-program would address my symptums . I have read about the computer chips (JET, Hypertech,etc.....sounds like some of the same things that I am experiencing. Has anyone had this problem? Any feedback on the chips?

Try disconnecting your battery over night. That should flash the ECM and cause it to relearn everything all over again.

Thumbs down Still Poor Performance

Went to Jeep yesterday and they flashed my computer with an upgrade (Technical Service Bulletin for drivability issues). Did not help. Am I the only one having this problem???
I have read about the chip/programmers and they discribe their product to overcome poor performance/hesitation/bucking. If they are making these products then somebody must be having the same problems.
If so, has ANYONE overcome the surging/bucking/hesitation under heavy acceleration from lower rpm's 3rd gear? Is this just the way jeep computer settings leave you? I assume that when the jeep warmsup it starts leaning the system down causing lag responses.

Help !

OK, not to be elementary, but did you also change the dist cap/rotor, air filter & plug wires? Poor spark or not enough air coming will cause what you describe. May want to consider a new O2 sensor while you're at it.

Problem Resolved

Unfortunately I found some metal in my oil and decided to replace the engine. In doing so I found the time chain wear would allow the engine to rotate some 20 to 30 degrees before the rotor would move. Explains all the symptoms. I had a hunch that this could have been the problem, but everyone said the timing chains do not cause problems with the mileage.
I hope this may help someone else hunting for a similar relief.
Thanks for all of your input.

Could you have just replaced the timing set? Did it seem there was poor maintenance on the motor? (if you got it used) What did the rest of the motor look like?
