'97 TJ Sport - Driver Seat Tumble?

I posted this question in another thread earlier but since it's off-topic I felt I should start a new thread. My main reason for doing this is because it seems a driver's seat that tumbles is pretty common, or maybe it was standard equipment on at least some TJs? I'd really like to find out more about this. Gee, 15 plus years with my TJ (I bought it new) and I've never been able to access the back seat from the driver's side. Anyway, what's the bottom line on the tumbling driver's seat? Was it an option, standard equipment, or something else? Any info would be welcome!
.................................................. .
Original Post Below:

After all these years owning my '97 TJ I have to ask - Is the driver's seat supposed to tumble like the passenger seat does? I know I've tried it a few times but I couldn't figure it out. Duh.....

OK - I was inspired to go look at my driver's seat again. It will not tumble. No way. The seat back doesn't even fold forward past vertical. The mechanism to tumble is just not there.

Not all jeeps had both fold and tumble forward seats. It was an option not standard equipment

The driver's seat in a '97 did not fold & tumble, only its passenger seat did.

This question has been asked A LOT and there are a number of threads. No one seems to know the real answer. It does not ever appear that it was standard with any model/year/package.

03 X passenger only here. Neighbor 03 Rubicon passenger only

What? The owner has a '97 and the answer given above is exactly right for a '97. Tip & fold was only available for the passenger seat for a '97.

My '97 driver seat folds all the way forward, always assumed it was stock but will have to check again

Here's my 97 and it tumbles. The cable that goes through the seat often breaks so you have to push the little lever underneath

Perhaps what I am calling tip (fold) and tumble is not what some of you guys are calling tip and tumble. My '97 TJ's passenger seat had a very dramatic release mechanism that completely released and moved the seat far forward into the passenger footwell. My driver's seat had a different mechanism and would not move anywhere close to that, it only moved about as far as the second to last photo above.

Thanks for the info Jerry, and as far as my '97 goes it is exactly as you state: passenger-side only for tip & fold. Oh well, I was hoping I'd find out something new about that driver's seat.

PS - I saw the pics from 97Wrangler-242 above and he has different seats than mine. No pull strap on left side of seat to do the tip & fold (driver side). The passenger side has the little pull strap on the right side (makes sense - ya gotta be able to grab it to pull it). Also, no lever underneath.

Mine is the same as 97wrangler-242 and if you slide the seat forward first there is plenty of room to fit through

I found one on CL for $45 for a pair. I do not need the passenger and he wont break the set but for $45 I think i will still get it. It is a pain to get to kids in and out of the back and to buckle into their carseats all from the passenger side.

'Fold and tumble' is the term given to the action of the rear seat.
'Slide and tilt' is what the front seats do.
And yes, both front seats on my '97 do this.

When I bought my TJ, both seats would slide, but neither seat would tilt forward.

On one side, the seat release cable had broke, so replaced it with one fom here.

Jeep Wrangler Seat Release Cable Repair 1997 up TJ

There are about 4 different cables, so you will need to pull your seat out to see which one you have. I actually bought the wrong one but was able to make it work.

On the other side, the metal release paddle under the seat was so stiff it couldn't move - with some lubrication and plenty of moving back and forth, it loosened up and now works like a charm.

Just for FYI - The factory service manual isn't much help. It doesn't give you a good view of the mechanism of either seat and does not give a clue how to operate the seats. The owner's manual is almost as useless. It makes no mention of the driver's seat being able to operate the same as the passenger seat. A BIG however, it did remind me of the little lever on the back of the driver's seat that releases the catch so it can fold forward (the seat back only). I plumb forgot about that!

Thanks to all for the comments and info! Shook a few cobwebs loose in the old brainpod.

I took the fold and tumble seat mounts out of my 2001 TJ and installed the fixed ones from a 1997. I have not looked at them for more than a year but if they are complete and i still have everything i will list them for sale this weekend. One of you guys could convert your seat

I'd jump on it! The ones on eBay are $215 plus about $25 shipping! If they were less costly I might get some. Oh well, other priorities.

A couple posts above mine began addressing multiple years, which is what these threads end up doing. Trying to deterine which ones have the drivers fold/tumble.

My 97 Sahara has both drivers and passenger side fold and tumble seats. Both sides have the little black strap coming out of the side of the seat that makes it fold and tumble. Only thing I don't like is I can't use a regular underseat storage drawer, I have to get one about half the size :-(. But it's nice to be able to let rear passengers in or out on either side. Wonder if the seats are standard on the Sahara? Another friend that has a 97 Sahara has them as well.

I have a '97 all stock as far I know and it does do the tip and tumble. It has the lever on the side to let the seat recline, the bar underneath to move forward and backward and the strap sticking out of the outer side that take a good jerk but does move the whole thing up against the dash.

No idea if this was standard or optional but I definitely have it.

I will be buying a used one today. The hassle of trying to get a 3yr old into a car seat is pain. it is almost easier to unzip the window and strap him thru it.
