so here it is hope your in for a long one. drove the jeep to work it didnt start when i went to go home. checked all the relays ADS fuel pump all that jazz and replaced the ADS. As for the fuel pump relay it was fairly new already. I have searched online for others with this problem and have heard every fix under the sun. All the relays, grounds, power to PD box. I replaced the fuel pump it works i tried it! I bypassed the relay by adding a jumper to the relay from the battery and the fuel pump came on, sure enough the thing starts and runs. if i put the relay back in it just cranks and the pump doesn't come on:banghead: The only thing that i think is weird is the steering wheel doesn't lock anymore. I am wondering if something broke in the column and isnt sending the right signal to the PCM to tell it to let the pump come on... I dunno sounds weird, but it is a jeep. I replaced the CPS a while back about 10000 miles ago. I have heard that the CPS has a lot to do with letting the ECU work other systems. I tried hooking up an OHM meter to (CPS) and it didn't register, dont know if im an idiot or if the CPS is really not working properly. I know that all these systems need to work properly in order to let is start and run. Here is my idea bypass the relay with a switch and new relay and direct wire the pump, so all I have to do is turn on the switch and the pump will run! is this a good idea? has anyone done this before? Wish i had the money to drop in a new motor and harness and get rid off all the crap crysler put under the hood............PLEASE HELP ME im loosing my mind:banghead:again still banging my head oh and here are the essentials 97 wrangler( i know bad year) 2.5 liter squirrel cage(they work hard and im proud). 4th rebuilt automatic(does it get any worse!!) 4in lift 35's 4.56's

Reading an open at the crankshaft position sensor is good, that is a normal reading for it. My guess is that you either have a bad CPS, despite its good reading, or more likely since you already replaced the CPS 10k miles ago, your ignition coil has gone bad. My coil went bad on the trail back in May and gave me the same symptoms.

first of all sorry for double posting, my bad. well its a screeming demon coil not just a parts house unit so i would hope it lasts for longer than 10K. it does have spark the only way I know this is i can bypass the relay by jumping directly from the battery to the plug in the power distribution box and the pump will run, it will start right up., i replaced the CPS and coil at the same time. along with wires plugs and cap and rotor

i guess i feel like a tool, but its running now i cleaned the shit out of all the connections with electric cleaner and a wire brush. sure enough damn thing started i guess it was the cleaner that did it. thanks for the help with the idea i am glad to see jeepers helping jeepers. much thanks

My jeep was sitting for about 2 weeks, I tries starting but it woundn't turn over. Every time I let go of the key it woud stop trying to turn over completelly. I found myself holding the key in the run position almost forcing it to run or turn over. Eventually after about a half hour it turned over. I let it run for a while it was good, but never drove it. I tried a few days later and got nothing. Just some clicking by the starter relay box but not even a click to the starter. I replaced the battery, starter, and starter relay...and still got nothing. ANY IDEAS???
Not sure if it could be the ignition coil? or what?
I have a 97 4.0

I've got a crank/no start on my 93 sahara 4L V6, before it completely died it would start really rough, sometimes misfire..from a life time of racing dirtbikes I felt it had to be something with the gas, I've got spark, when I turn the key to I hear the ECM click but the fuel pump doesn't prime, it's got a full tank of gas so I don't really want to drop the tank but I will if I get a few opinions. I'm thinking bad ground or something on the fuel pump, sometimes it growls and sometimes it doesn't. I replaced alternator, battery, terminals, fuel filter, spark plugs, plug wires...and now I don't hear the fuel pump turning on. She cranks like a cherry but refuses to start, every fifth time or so she will stutter like she is about to start but never does..ideas?

Start with the basics. An engine needs air, fuel, spark, compression to run.

Not familiar with the 93 set up is carb or fuel injected?

Check for spark, compression, and fuel first, see which one you don't have.

If it's fuel, none at the plugs, work backwards to see where it stopped.

Fuel to the carb or injectors? No, fuel to the filter? No, can't hear the pump run? No

Then go to what feeds the pump. Relay working? power to the relay? Jump the relay and see if the pump kicks on. Yes? Find what feeds the relay if there is no juice going to it or it's not kicking on. Could be a bad relay, or something like a bad crankshaft position sensor not signalling the ecm to fire up the pump, bad ecm, poor connections, etc.

Sounds like what we call "Shotgunning", throwing parts at it till it runs. That can get expensive real quick. You are better off spending time diagnosing the problem to find the fault then taking shots at what it might/might not be.

12 volt jumper wire to the power feed wire on the pump. Gives direct voltage to the pump, eliminates the relay and the feed circuit to the relay.

word. I pulled off the fuel line at the fuel rail and the filter, no gas coming out while cranking. I'm about to cut off a bolt that the previous owner decided to strip the sh*t out of so I can drop the tank and get at the stuff I need to. Can I take the fuel pump out and test it in my hand? or does it need to be in the tank? Also, I'm a journeyman electrician, would regular 12/2 wire work (the wire that is used for regular lights and outlets) or would I need a bigger size? I think I've got some 6 and 8 wire around here somewhere..
