98 Jeep Wrangler TJ

Sometimes my jeep will start and sometimes it won't. I have power but doesn't start everytime. Any suggestions on what it might be?

This is the first time using this site. I'm not sure if I am doing this right. I have 98 Jeep Wrangler TJ Sahara. It won't start all the time. Doesn't seem like the starter. Any one experiencing this with theirs

You're doing it right.. but I was just asking.. could you be more descriptive about what happens when it doesn't start? Noises.. etc. Does it try to turn over, does it eventually start? Does it need gas to start...

To be honest this is my son's jeep. He is in the Army and doesn't have access to a computer so I am helping him. He said sometimes he can grind on the starter and then it will start. He said he took off the fuel filter and there is fuel going to it.

welcome. I would start with the starter itself. Does it appear to be working correctly? From there, if possible, stop by an auto parts store that can check the computer and see if they can pull a code up to give a better idea. As for the fuel filter, did he drop the tank to get to it, or is there an additional one in the fuel line as well?

When it doesn't start.....do you hear a "click" from under the hood?

He said he took it to the shop because he doesn't have the tools to work on it. He said they hooked it up and found a number of things wrong. They seen a bolt on the Alternator and tightened it and it started. The starter is clicking when it doesn't start. He did not drop the tank when he checked the filter. He also said one time he tried alot of times to start it then the starter started to smoke, but it did start.

Hope he figures it out. It's no good to be away from home and dealing with people you don't know when you have troubles with your ride.

p.s. Just about every military base I've ever been stationed at has an on base shop where you can get time slots and sign out tools.

Thanks. I'm sure he would know if he can sign tools out. Have you ever experienced anything like this? Do you have any suggestions?

Yes, he said it cranks but won't start. Although, sometimes it does start. He is afraid he will ruin his starter if he keeps trying
