98 TJ w/Dana 44 rear axle help needed

Hello everyone,

About a month ago I purchased a 98 TJ with Dana 44 rear axle and OX locker already installed. The rear parking brakes do not work and the rear diff seal (driveshaft) is leaking. Where do i purchase Dana 44 axle parts?

thanks

So the leak is where the pinion seal is, where the driveshaft mates to the yoke at the diff? You also need to find out WHY the parking brake won't work, not just that it doesn't. Little more detail.

Why can't you simply go to the dealer and get the parts? And as fire239 says, there is a reason the parking brake does not work. Might want to look into this for some more information.

You can check out our vendors on the site many of them sell the parts you are looking for. The parking brake might just need an adjustment of the wires. Have you pulled the drums yet?

I went to the Mopar/Jeep dealer he didn't know what seal to give me because 98 TJ didn't come with Dana 44 and it has rear disk brakes so i will be looking it over soon, just looking for a good place for replacement parts as i get into repairing it.

thanks for the replies i will let you know what i see and pics of it soon

Define what the parking brake is doing that it doesn't work. Is there any tension all at when you pull up on the brake? If not, your cable may have become separated at the nut-point underneath the jeep in front of the rear tire. You'll see where the cable comes through the floor and then connects to a nut part.

If it is working, kind of, then you might have broken your parking brake strut springs. Remove the wheel drums and check that the parking brake struts in the center (the bar above the hub that is horizontal) is in good working condition. Make sure your rear brakes also have enough tension and are adjusted properly.

That last post kinda cleared it up. 1998 TJs, some of them, did come with D44s. They didnt come with disc brakes. I would suspect that the PO swapped the axle with perhaps a later model Rubicon D44, which did come with disc brakes. During the swap, he just didnt hook up the emergency brake. The cable has to be modified a bit to work with disc when converting from drums.

^^^As fire239 says. Disk brakes came on 2004 and up Rubicons which is most likely the cause of the parking brake as said.
